.....should have been looking for a new car but, had a chance to have a climb over this little beast and a good look though the electrical cabin, end cabs and plant room.

It does look very good following its recent re-paint.

3000+Hp....very nice!

And old fashioned contactor based electrics and controls with DCshunt motor traction!

I'd stick with an Omega Mark - cost a fortune to insure one of those  :o :o ;D ;D ;D

Yeah ha ha ha very rather funny try sitting in the cab of those loco`s for 10 hrs a day then later in life losing your hearing and enjoyment of life and before you ask no BR did not issue any kind of hearing protection as this would of opened them up to admitting liabilty!!! >:(

Bad luck, I did notice that one cab was significantly quieter than the other (engine being mounted at one end).

I guess those were the days when you were expected to protect yourself.

They also have 3 class 20's, 2 class 08's (1 having a new cooling plant fitted), 1 class 25, 2 class 47's (one awaiting a new main bearing), 1 class 37 (being re-painted) and the 56....most of which do run!

Best of it is, you turn up and ask them, and they will let you have a good nose about!

Its quite worrying when your 3 year old son is sat in the driving seat of a 25 which has 4 coaches on the back and is sat idling!

My ex managed to do that at Eastleigh with my then four year old sitting in the drivers seat of a class 47! 8-) 8-)

All three of my children, at some stage or another, once sat on the footplate of many Mid-Hants Railway engines, especially W.C. 34016 Bodmin 8-) 8-)

That Class 56 is beautiful though Mark, and I would love to take it for a spin! :D :D ;)

No need to apologise, you had a fair point.  Its was probably an era that H&S was not considered.  Mrs TheBoy's dad is half deaf from working in a factory all his life, repairing big presses etc.  Most of my Mum's old workmates are deaf as there were all operators (apparently makes you go deaf in one ear).

That said, I think we are too cautious with H&S now though...

I've still got a ringing in my ear from yesterday after trying (and failing) to educate a cylinder head with a club hammer ::)

When I was there they were fitting a time delay relay to it.

They have a common fault with the coolant level switch. Under braking or hard acceleration the coolant can slosh in th tank, tripping the low coolant trip and stopping the engine! They fit a 10 second time delay relay to stop it happening.

I asked if an RC time constant and Thyristor would not be better....they looked a little blank faced  :y

The owner was saying they are going to upgrade the anti slip setup to monitor and control individial axles (the current setup backs power to all axles under slip conditions) which would actualy turn it into a bit of a dragster!

Are they fitting SEPEX then - is the owner ex Brush?

BTW the engine is a direct descendant of the first mainline Diesel loco.

Started at 1600bhp in LMS 10000 & 10001 reached 1750 and 2000 in the SR prototypes, 2000 in the 40s, 2700 in DP2 and the 50s, 3250 in the 56s, lost 4 cylinders and gained 50bhp in the 58s

1600 2 valve turbo
2000 4 valve turbo
2700 intercooled
3250 tuned it a bit

And yes it is what it looks like a 47 shell with EE engine. ;D

No they re-covered the setup from another scrapped unit.....simple to fit actually!

I seemed to know more of teh drive theory than anybody else there which was surprising.

They only run a single stage of field weakening apparantly which kicks in at about 45 ish mph

Most Diesel locos ran two stages - you can sometimes feel it change.

Some could only go to full power on weakest field - notably Deltics.

Insufficient field weakening also can ruin a locos high speed performance
