clipped mirors with another car.....
« on: 06 April 2009, 15:28:39 »

Hi all - I am after some advice really, just been into town taking the kids for a dental check-up, we were in my wife's Galaxy with me driving and just on our way back and we took the quiet back roads which are narrow in places... I am traveling along and a Zafira is approaching from the opposite direction with a good half a metre between him and the flat grass verge - I get right over so that I have 2 wheels on the grass verge my side but he stays in the middle of the road - I start to slow but our mirrors collide and both the casings ping off and mine slams against the window and breaks the mirror.  I stop and so does he - as soon as I get out he is going into a massive tantrum about my breakneck speed and he had nowhere to go to avoid the collision - yet i was doing no more than 25MPH - this is bourne out by my ability to stop 7 metres or so after the collision, he was really aggressive and I am sorry to admit that not exactly being easily intimidated we were nose to nose and it looked like this was going to go further than a couple of broken mirrors - we were going to exchange details but somewhere in the heated exchange I must have thought better of giving this guy my home address - luckily my wife took pics of him and his car and he was the first person to drive off from the scene - she also took video of him driving off.

Now i am wondering should i call my insurance company and should i just log a call with the local police in case it becomes an issue at a later date - or is this a storm in a teacup that the local plod can well do without?  Also dont want to get them involved if i can help it as they could look at it as both of us being at fault....

I would personally inform the police and then my insurance company and keep the photo`s and video evidence as he left the scene of the accident and i would write it all down now whilst its fresh in my mind...

As no blows were exchanged after each of you stopped after the accident, and both of you entered into a heated exchange, but no assault transpired, then it is all a civil matter which the police will not want to know about.

Just keep the evidence, let your insurance company know, but apart from that I would just replace the wing mirror and move on putting it down to experience! ;)

PS If there were no independent witnesses then it is your word against his. ::)

Cheers Bertie and Lizzie - I am just going to call the insurance company and tell them as an information only type of thing, no actual claim - just in case he tries to claim through the reg number.

I will then rely on that if the police are involved at a later date.

Have just managed to clip the casing back on so all it will cost me is a broken mirror glass I hope.

if you report it to the insurance company now - even without a claim - remember to declare it on next renewal as an accident in last five years or you could void your insurance.

Cheers for the advice all - and no there was no white lines in the middle of the road.

Have spoken to my insurers and they have noted it on my file and it will be deleted off in 3 months if no contact is made, it doesn't get carried forward and is presumed to have been settled privatley.

We shall see what happens.

Best that you have reported as the Police can step in if he blames you and lies etc  & you get something like 4pts for not reporting it and 5pts for leaving the scene of an accident  :y

Make sure you inform your insurance company and the Police that there was def no other people about, as it sounds like a case of he will have 2 or 3 witnesses by the time he tells his insurance company.

This does happen, and has happened to me  >:(

Dont apologise, dont be intimidated by anyone, you have a right to defend yourself........if it was me i would let it lie and replace the mirror and put it down to experience.

Lol, cheers all - by strange coincidence as I was driving away from where I had stopped my brother was the next car we met - he was trying to avoid a traffic jam and never normally goes down that road - if he had seen it all happen how strange would that have looked on any claim !!
