Video Camera Advice - one for Martin Imber?
« on: 30 January 2007, 20:14:36 »

I do the occasional bit of Video Editing along with messing around with various vehicles.

Martin Imber is mentioned in the title as I remember that he is into video

Currently, I have a Sony DCRVX2000E (The Boy, I know your views about Sony ;D) which I would like to get serviced.  Does anyone know a decent place where I could get this done?  I am not too worried about distance, just want to find somewhere that is good and a reasonable price.

I did think that I may get the newer version of this camera (if there is one of course) but, for something that I hardly use, it seems to be the more expensive option so a service may be money better spent.

Any thoughts?

Firstly Jaime there are only 3 mainsteam companies making domestic video cameras worth buying and the best of those IS Sony. (not counting Ikegami & co)

This is one market Sony have from bottom (point & shoot) to top (broadcast HDTV)

For service, well a problem here both places I know have shut down so I'd suggest starting here.

Bit of a cop out but it is probably your best bet. As a lot of their cheap stuff is now throw away the service centres appear to be disappearing.

Might be a little slow as my wife had a CCD repair due to fault done last year on her stills camera - that was FOC but took about 2 weeks.

Last time I had a camera repaired I needed the 14pin K plug repaired, that camera was retired due to knackered tube.

What is actually wrong? Does it still work fine?

You could just clean it (soft brush) and shove a cleaning tape through for a few seconds.

Cheers for the advice Martin, I thought I would end up going to Sony to be honest but just asked on the off chance.

The camera itself works fine - still produces the same stunning images etc.  When editing, if you let the tape run to the end, it behaves exactly as if the heads are dirty i.e. pixilation and drop outs for both picture and sound.  Then, when you rewind the tape, after this occurring, it starts to chew it up.  Go back some more and it seems fine again - plays properly and rewinds OK as well.  I suspect that the tape transport needs re aligning or adjusting in some way.  I have got a cleaning cassette but it made no difference to the drop out issue at the end of a tape.

It is all quite annoying really as the camera has done hardly any hours.

Sounds dirty* or out of alignment - get it checked then, they are helpful.

*Any smokers in the house? The smoke clogs delicate mechanisms.

Thanks Martin,

I suspected an aligment problem.  I am pleased to say that there are no smokers in the house.  The camera is stored in one of those foam lined metal camera cases and, when on the editing desk and not is use, is covered with a cloth to prevent dust.

I try and take "reasonable care" of it!  :)

I will contact Sony and see what happens and post up the results.

Thanks again for your advice.

Thats OK

My portable problems have been

A) SLF1/4000P
1) Audio in socket broke up on the F1 - did an emergency repair in an engine shed!!!!

2) Dropped HVC4000P camera onto a concrete floor off a radiator, moved back focus slightly

3) Camera lead broken wires, kept getting black recordings.

4) All 6 battery packs failed ended up pinching my dads battery belt.

B) DC-TRV33
1) Lost the lens cap

2) Clogged heads - used cleaning tape

However the portable outfit was used from 1985 to 1997 (when camera tube failed) and I bought it at a couple of years old.

Been on MinDV for 4 - 5 years now. Was video camera less for about 4 years
