sent my new laptop away for repair, the item was repaired ok however, they have wore the coa away, all that is now visable is the coa key, i know that is all i need to reinstall vista the point, i have contacted hp on several occasions, their attitude is tough and are not prepared to do any thing about it, imho the label should be brought back to the way is was before it was sent, the laptop was only 2 weeks old before they got hold of it, i am considering action against Hp via the legal system, but would like some input from u oofers,
why should i put up with the laptop coming back is a worse state that when is went.

I'm surprised they have managed to wear away the COA in the 2-4 days they would have it.  It is protected from rubbing by the feet, and even after 18months on using mine on my lap, in the bath, in the car etc, mine is still (just) readable!

done that already, the serial numbers etc all match, the coa was as new when it went, but hardly readable when returned

I checked with a solictor friend of mine today.  

Unfortuately their legal obilgation ends with repairing the machine to a working condition  :-/, the fact that you can read coa at all is a bonus  .

I recommend that you make a note of the key if you can still read it as they are not obilgated to provide it. They are only obligated to return it to you in the same working condition that they sold it to you, unfortunately damage, scratches etc. can be blamed on the postman (the postman can blame hp).

I am sure you can see the beginning of the problem.  

Whilst you are still in warranty and you if can't read the coa all that is left  for you to send the machine away and then get it returned in a restored working condition, even this is debatable as their obligation is to supply the machine in a working condition and software is extra (Bundled at their expense in the selling offer).

Remember the labels come off very easy with a hot air gun. I had one come back with a different plastic base but the same label.

Re the legal obligation, I would have thought they have to return the machine in the same condition, not worse. If they have damaged it, they are obliged to repair it. And as for blaming the postman, if HP packaged it properly, there is no way the postman could damage it without removing it from its packing. Interestingly enough, I sent in a DV9000 for the mainboard repair. It was in a hell of a state, plastic broken etc. They fixed the main board and sent it back with a  new base, new top, new screen bezzel, new RHS hinge, new lid back, new drive cover. There have even been cases of them replacing the HD for free. I think some of their repair agents take the p1ss, and change HP as much as they can.

However they sometimes fit duff replacements. My son's DV9000 went off for a mainboard replacement. It died with the same graphics fault 4 months later.
