Catlin Arctic Survey - PR stunt?
« on: 09 April 2009, 11:06:50 »

There's this bunch of environmentists that are trying to walk to the North Pole and measure the ice on the way.

If you look at their website, you'll see their biotelemetry, giving heart rate, core temperature, skin temperature and breathing. Operational it says and, wow, it does look clever!

Only trouble is....

...it seems to be old looped data and not "live" at all.  :-?

Read the story here:

Posters have been able to determine how the website works and have discovered some interesting shortcomings. The comment thread makes fascinating reading.

The leader of the three-person team is Pen Hadrow. He was the twit who had to be airlifted from the Pole in 2003:
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/rescuers-criticise-arctic-explorer-for-risking-lives-539163.html
"The British explorer Pen Hadow was rescued by plane from the North Pole yesterday - and came under immediate criticism from the emergency team "for risking lives" by the "stupid" decision to launch his Arctic mission when the pack ice was melting with the onset of spring."..."People are at risk - the ice breaks and it shouldn't really happen. No one should expect to be picked up from there later than 30 April ..."

So far, the team has covered 243.35 km.
Average daily distance: 6.39 km
Estimated distance to North Pole: 681.17 km
Time on Arctic Ocean: 38 days

At this rate, there's no way they'll get to the Pole by 30 April.

Seems he doesn't car about putting lives at risk, so long as he gets his own glory.  :-/
