Are MOT testers on a "Fail Rate Target"?

Put the QX in for the dreaded test, having checked it over and feeling fairly confident .... flaming thing failed !!!!!

I had removed all the Air Fresheners etc., too  >:( >:(

What's written on the fail sheet ? ............

"Rear number plate lamp flickers when you tap it"

At least it's only a new bulb but, Flamin' 'eck, what are these guys on ?????
unofficially, yes. they get visits from vosa if not failing enough.

That's what 'my' MOT tester told me too when I discussed air fresheners with him!  ::)  ;)  ;)  ;)

It went to Cook Way Service Centre in Bindon Road.  I usually use Nationwide in town, but, for reasons that escape me, didn't this time round.

Firstly, apologies  HC for hijacking this thread.....

Have you heard the one about.....................

Took the car into the garage for the mot and lpg idle problem as mentioned earlier...as well as emission light lit.

Fails MOT on emissions on petrol, fault traced to hole in vacuum pipe..good we like!!

Checks emissions on gas hydrocarbons at 7.8 whatevers (ppm?) instead of 0.000000 something recurrring!!

So gas is running massively rich at idle, unburnt gas in cat means emissions light on dash...........I'm with it so far!! Did I mention the Lambda sensor the Vauxhall stealers fitted at the start of the year.....unneccesarily!! >:(

Meanwhile the car needs 4 tyres for the mot, well 3, so did them all. Went for Dunlop fast response ( thought I'd get some decent rubber).

Garage examines my lpg install (fully certified no less) only to discover that the components came out of the Arc, and were made by three different manufacturers.. two of which are now out of business, plus there are some extra gadgets fitted to fudge the system.

When they eventually manage to get the Romano software of the right vintage to talk to the ECU, they discover that the ECU has dropped the map, will not accept an auto setup instruction and they can't get it to setup manually, ECU is fudged................bad............original map is immediately overwritten whem manual setup attempted, so car now no longer runs on gas.

After much deliberation decide to have new front end Prins system fitted figuring with the miles that I do I'll recoup the costs in just over a year!!!

Garage takes off old front end system at no charge , replaces it with new one. Starts car afterwards...and notices a "slight misfire", which then started knocking  and threw up some codes, well lots of codes actually looking at the list at the time!!

The car has still only idled at this point, but the knocking is now causing enough concern to turn off the engine.......really bad............that's the last time the car was running.

Garage then spend a lot of time at no charge to me trying to figure out what they have done to cause this problem given that all they've done is swap over the gas system front end....... having converted several miggys previously they had never seen this problem.

They ultimately decide that nothing they'd done that would have caused this... so decide to investigate further to determine the cause of this catastrophe.

I ultimately  get invited to have a look at the top of my No 5 piston through the spark plug hole using a boroscope ........all looks well top of piston present and correct. The top of the No3 piston however was completely gone, could just make out the top of a conn rod. Garage tells me that having pulled the cam belt cover back to have a peek at the cam belt it didn;t appear to have snapped but there were bits of rubber that shouldn't be there, coming to the conclusion that a failed cam belt tensioner had caused the problem and that the damage to the engine was terminal!!  (Cambelt and tensioner kit was replaced at Vauxhall stealers only 20k earlier).

Oh good says I :'(

So now my Miggy sits dead at the garage, I've had the lpg kit fitted to another car without any issues. I should say at this point that having talked it through with several work mates I have no reason to doubt the integrity of the garage :y

It has only done 71k, has 4 brand spanking new tyes on it (less than 70 miles) and has cost me the best part of two grand since christmas..........did I also mention the 400 quids worth of audio I put ito the car as a "christmas present to self" :'( >:(

Haven't decided what to do with the car yet, any thoughts anyone???.......as long as it doesn't involve petrol and matches ;D

As I am mechanically inept --- the most complicated engine I can deal with is hanging off the back of the buggy ( Mini A series! ) --- a mate did mine (at mate's rates) ---- local garage knows Omegas backwards .... otherwise I would have offered assistance  :-[

in my opinion they souldent have failed it, if a light is working and is secure then it is a pass , if it were the other way round i.e tape it to make it work then carry out a repair at time of test,
vosa are the problem, they make the rules with no one to rule them,
they state a average fail rate of 35% per test station
you could take your situation up with vosa if you wanted
