Japanese reliability strikes again....
« on: 15 April 2009, 15:35:33 »

Can anyone help me with this?
My mothers Nissan Micra died on her way to work this morning as if the engine was running on the battery and it went dead, the lights went dim and the enige slowed down and stalled.

After giving her a lift to work and came home it just started straight away switched it off and then it died again.

Even though the battery light didn't come on, could it be the altenator is knackered?

Yes.

[Well, rectifier fault]

In a 'normal/conventional' alternator setup (of course some manufacturers are able to modify the appearance of this) you need some battery charge, a working ignition lamp (okay, some with bypass) and working field coils (alternator).

You need to stick a meter on it to see what's going on.  Very approximately; look for ~12v across the battery when switched off, 13.5-14.0 (14.5 Ca) when charging.

Likewise with my QX -- careful though, when we started her on the pack to move her to the workshop the alternator went up in a shower of sparks !

I had two -- a white one which was PX'd for a newer red one -- which a nurse on her way to work parked her mini in the back of.  Her first words when she got out of my boot were, " I have been meaning to get those brakes seen to" !!
