Another bike question... Clothing...
« on: 19 April 2009, 15:26:46 »

I've had a J&S branded Jacket, and IXS pants for a year now, so decided to treat myself and get an IXS jacket to match the pants today from J&S.

Main reason for this is I was getting fed up from riding and the pants & jacket not being fastened together, so letting in all the elements at the back :(  So now I have the IXS combo, the little zip fastens them together perfectly!

However... the Zip fastens about 2 inches too high up the back of the Jacket, and when I'm riding, its pulling down like a crazy little midget in a circus...

So I'm just wondering, would it be safe to lower the zip on the Jacket by about 2", so giving a bit more free play?  Not sure if I should have the zip unstitched and then stitched lower down, or just cut the fabric which the zip is stitched too (its like a flap for those who don't know IXS) and then extend it with another piece of fabric?

Just to note, I now have the IXS Tengai Trousers, and IXS Eldorado Jacket.
Jacket being replaced is the J&S Maxi Jacket

Cheers :)

Well on my leathers (as i have a jacket and trousers too, prefer to be able to take my jacket off when I stop) they were tight to start with but they do give a little. Plus I am a shadow of my former self so perhaps that helped ;D

;D Well I do know my weight isn't doing too many favours, but I do also have quite a long back compared to normal folk (32" inside leg, yet I'm 6'5" tall), so I think the zip position will be the main contributing factor...

They don't have an IXS Jacket bigger than this one as its the biggest they go upto  :o so adjustment is the only option...

I have a Dainese jacket and some trousers i don't know the make of, i don't zip them together, but never had a problem?

Always nice and warm, and dry, have been out in the wet, no issues. With the CG your fairly upright as well, so is the jacket too short maybe?

Unfortunately there is nothing longer tunnie, I always suffer with jackets, shirts, coats, etc, all being too short due to the fact most of my height does come from my upper body.

When customers ask if a particular jacket and trousers zip together, I advise that even if they do, they will soon get fed up of either being choked or the collar of the jacket pushing into the base of the helmet and tilting the head forwards and down.
Folk come in all shapes and sizes and this sort of thing is very hit or miss.

what ever jacket you have will be better than the jns, from bitter experience their stuff really is crap, and have the scars to prove it, just fell apart when its ment to protect, iirc it does not have the british kite mark or what ever standard clothing is ment to comply to. Unless they bucked their ideas up in the last few years of course.

Have a look in mcn for local company to get your ixs altered, or you may need to send then off. Sadlers sometimes take on this type of work on if theirs knowone near. Note though that decent kit usually zips all the way round and the elastic stitched to the leather not the lining. Koz if you do go sliding up the road it WILL ride up and leave you exposed.

Maybe have a look at more expensive suits in the shop and see how its constructed, but i would def alter it. You dont want any distractions. :-)

I rarely zip mine together as it becomes a bit uncomfy.  I do ensure whatever clothes I'm wearing underneath is fully tucked in though to prevent draft in lower back, esp as my bike is a bit lean forward....
