Oh dear Debs has got me thinking of great English / British history!!

Such as:
"I know I have the body of a weak and feeble woman, but I have the heart and stomach of a king, and of a king of England too, and think it foul scorn that Parma or Spain, or any prince of Europe, should dare invade the borders of my realm........"
Queen Elizabeth I,
Tilbury, on the morning of 9th August 1588, after the defeat of the Spanish Armada, but with a remaining threat of an invasion by Parma heading a Spanish army.
and.........
"England expects every man will do his duty"
Admiral Lord Nelson
Trafalgar, at 1140 on 21st October 1805
The overwhelming victory gained by the Royal Navy on this day gave them unchallenged superiority over the seas of the World until the Battle of Jutland, 30th May 1916, after which they still held supremacy.
and............
"Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few."--
Speech made by Prime Minister, Winston Churchill in the House of Commons as the Battle Britain peaked on August 20, 1940.
The home front was totally involved in the war because of the Germany bombing raids and Britain was "a whole nation fighting and suffering together." But special gratitude was directed towards the airmen whose prowess and devotion were capable of turning the tide of the war. Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few. He worked out the phrase in his mind as he visited the Fighter Command airfields in Southern England.
It is history like this that emphasises the greatness of England (not forgetting Great Britain as a whole!), and the legacy of St.George that encapsulates the steadfastness of her people.
God save the Queen!
