We drove to North Leicester Motorcyles in the family car. I'd already decided to buy it, simply because 15 years earlier, I had owned one just like it. We parked the bike in the pub car park opposite. I had bought it earlier, parked it, and we then went to spend the day at a National Trust property. And then back to the bike shop, now closed. A 200kg 750cc twin. I was scared, I wobbled, there was no choice. I followed the car down the motorway, too scared to ride properly, and blinded by the disntegrating lining of the old helmet that had been unused for many years. Born again after 15 years, this wasn't a glorious rebirth.
Five years later, I still own that old Laverda 750. And some new riding gear. I've ridden a few modern bikes by now. They're brilliant - fast, efficient, easy to ride. But curiously bland, compared to my rough old Laverda. One day I'll buy a Tuono.....
Modern bikers are fortunate. You never had to experience the rough old things we had to. And the motorcycles are better too. On the other hand, I didn't need to endure proper training. I survived anyway, by luck and for long enough to learn defensive skills. Or I just got old and sensible.
Enjoy your training. It has a purpose - to keep you out of trouble. Don't be in a hurry - live to ride, ride to live.
Old bikers never die, but everyone wishes they would.
