Help! Stuck on Bike Coolant Change
« on: 26 April 2009, 14:01:31 »

So i decided to drop the coolant on the bike today, as its unknown history, i popped off the main pipe which is almost the lowest point in the system.

2L of coolant came out.

Now the coolant tank is not like the Omega, it does not feed the system, its basically a self contained pot, which a straw feed, which goes up to the top of the rad  :-/

So i filled that up and put it back on, and only managed to put in 1L of coolant in through the rad tap.

I have started it and run it, hoping it would move around the system and the level drop, but its staying the same.   :-/

Manual is useless, as it says take it to a dealer for coolant changes    :(

How am i supposed to get more coolant in? Do i need to get it hot enough for the stat to open?  :-/

Might a 50ml. disposable syringe be a possibility (just the plastic syringe-body without the needle) connected to the expansion/relief/vent pipe......You might need to loosen a hose clamp elsewhere on the circuit to allow air out as you 'inject' the fresh coolant mix in.
Syringes often available from a Pharmacy/Vet. etc.

Well whats confusing is i took the expansion bottle out, and filled that, as it has a straw feed, i thought it would suck some if it up.

But thats stayed the same, the level on the tank is correct, and if i take off the rad cap, the rad itself is full of coolant.

Its just the fact 2L came out, but 1L went in!  :-/

An air lock in the cylinder-head and/or radiator hoses perhaps?.....`might easily account for that 'lost' litre.

Can you get a good hand-squeeze on the rad. hose to try and mobilise any trapped air?

Is there an additional cap on the top of the radiator / stat housing (just where the pipe from the expansion tank exits)?

The engine will currently be empty so don't run it.

You need to fill the system separately to the expansion tank. There will be a pressure relief valve in the top of the radiator cap to expel coolant into the expansion tank when the pressure reaches a set level and to draw it back into the cooling system as it cools.

Ahh crap, i run it for about a min hoping it would move the coolant around, has it done any damage?  :'(

This is the system, i took the big pipe off...

Tank is at the top.

This is the rad tap:

And this is the pressure switch...

As you can see the rad is full, the hole circled leads to the expansion tank.

Took this from a YZF600 coolant change, its basically what i did  :-/

"Coolant: You'll notice a thick rubber hose coming from the radiator going down towards the drain plug. Unscrew the clamp that holds it in at the bottom and the coolant come gushing out once you loosen the hose. Once it's all out, pour a gallon of water through and just let it run right out. Put the hose back on, tighten the clamp and refill with coolant. Don't waste your money on the 50/50 stuff. You're paying for half a bottle of water. You can get water free and just 50/50 yourself. Anyhow the radiator cap is on the right side under the hand grip to the right of where the tank meets the bars. Unscrew it and fill it up. The first time full isn't full. Leave the cap off and start the bike. You'll see the coolant level go down. Leave it running and pour more into it until it's full. Turn bike off, put cap back on and you're done. You can also put some in the res under the seat if needed."

Yup, quite tricky as well so had to be slow.

Squeezed pipes, no joy.
