Help please!
« on: 02 May 2009, 17:28:16 »

Can anyone help with this problem I have with my acer laptop?

When I switch it on, I get a black screen with white text, giving me 4 different choices to boot up.

3 in safe mode and one to start normally.

I then get the standard XP screen with the scrolling bar.

The screen goes blank, then a blue screen briefly stating something about a memory dump.

Then it goes back to the start and keeps cycling.

It was working fine when I installed Norton about a fortnight ago, then it hasnt been used.

As it's an old laptop, I was going to use it for car stuff, workshop manuals, data, etc...

What's happened to it? :-?

I'd say it's time to format it, and re-install everything clean, from scratch :y

On boot up, before it shows the safe mode/normal keep pressing F8 and it'll show more options (on the same type of screen). There should be an option for disabling auto reboot on error, select thast one and it should reboot normally :y

I would try booting in safe mode then run autochk to sort the HDD.  Then try re-booting in normal mode.

If it won't boot in any mode then an OS repair may be possible if you have the OS CD.

Try taking norton off (Start/settings/controll pannel/Add-remove software) and reboot it again c if you still have the same problem. Have you made a restore point before installing the new program??? if not Next time do following Start/programs/accessories/system tools/system restore. and follow the instructions. its easy and helps a lot with them probs. or even better use an external hdd make a full backup once a month and an incromental backup once a week. its easy and saves lots of hassel. hope it helps. Dave. :y

Try either of these mate:

when booting up the computer, press F8. It will give you the boot option screen (safe mode, safe mode with command prompt etc). Choose the "Last Known Good Configuration" option. If it boots XP without any issues, remove that crap Norton antivirus. It's absolutely bullshit.

If the above does not work for you, try the same as above, but choose the "Safe Mode" option. If safe mode boots properly, go to the control panel, add/remove programs and uninstall the norton antivirus. Then, reboot the computer, press F8 again, choose safe mode (it usually gives you of going to safe mode or restore your computer to an earlier date - the first step involves you going to safe mode and this one (second step) involves you choosing to restore your computer to an earlier date). Now, after the computer starts, you'll see a calendar that pops up. Choose a date PRIOR to the Norton installation and the computer will process the restore and reboot by itself to go to windows xp normally. you should be up and running fine from there  :y :y :y

Hope this helps you mate   ;):y :y :y ;)
