Lets talk Tech 1 and Tech2
« on: 04 May 2009, 19:19:52 »

Ok. I have a purchased a 95 Omega. It has a OBD 2 port. If you look at the majority of software programs you can buy they will not work with the 2.5 and 3.0lt variants. As I understand it you need a Tech1 machine. I have one of these I use it on my Carlton 3lt and my Lotus carlton. These work by having different cartridges for different applications. I have a dedicated Omega cartridge coming to me as we speak but what use is this software without the correct plug. Vauxhall must of used the Tech1 with the early omegas or they wouldn't of bothered programming the cartridge. So am I missing a lead/converter? Is there a pc based software out there which can read the 2.5/3's Can I splice into the wires on the back of the OBD 2 port and wire in a tech1 port also?

That's right It's ALDL. So why the OBD2 shaped port?

Think it was down to the Americans saying that there should be a common designed socket somewhere close to the drivers seat.

Only 2.2/2.6/3.2 are OBDII cars.  All others are proprietry.

As it happens, the diag plug is a similar style to that used on OBDII.

Pre 1997 cars use Tech1 or Tech1a, though the Omega, due to the number of onboard systems, needs a dedicated cartridge.

Post 1997 cars use Tech2, and can fit all functions (except larger firmware updates) on a single 32Mb card.

Both the Tech1 and the Tech2 are available with a range of connectors for various applications.

Cheers for the info. So I have to find a lead to fit my Omega so I can use the Tech 1 or make a converter lead. On the current lead I have it only has 3 pins used. I'm guessing this is power and earth to the tech 1 and a wire to talk to the ecu. Do you know which pin this is on the ob2 port?

Its is NOT an OBDII port. It just looks vaguely similar.

The Omega uses 4 diag lines, not a single one like many earlier cars.

The genuine, proper tech1 lead has, I believe, some kind of multiplexor in the lead to select the correct pin (as the Tech1 only has 1 diag line on its onboard connector).  It is possible to put in a manual switch, or clever use of a couple of diodes, modify the lead so that it automatically selects all lines, but with diodes isolating a couple of ecus that can interfere with each other
