Went to see a car with a friend today and the log book had date of first registration as 2002 even though the car is registered on an R plate next to the reg date it said (DECL/D MANUF 1998) never seen this before anyone know what it means?

My old Jeep was bought new by a woman who was in the Army based in Germany.  

It came with all the receipts and invoices from day 1.

She paid for it at the Jeep dealer near here, had it shipped over to the Jeep dealer near where she was based in Germany (goodness knows why - it would surely have been cheaper buying one over there???), and collected it from there, with UK plates on it.  But it was classed as being 1st registered in Germany.

When she finished her posting, she brought it back to the UK with her.

When I bought it off her, the logbook said that it was declared manufactured in 1997, but 1st registered in 2000.

It was a lovely motor, with fully stamped up main dealer history (both in Germany and here, with all receipts to back it up).  Just a shame one of the cylinder heads expired - twice... (had the VM diseaseal engine, with 4 seperate cylinder heads...)

I think -- and I am sure other members ( Bet Lizzie knows   ) will either confirm, or shoot me down -- that a while back ( quite a few years) Ford had this "system" going to keep up it's apparent sales and therefore visible share of the market.  It basically manufactured and registered loads of cars in the channel isles, left them there for a year and then filtered them back into the UK mainland market as and when. This gave them high "sales" over the crucial period used to determine performance.

Anyway ---when these were "imported" and first registered in the UK they were generally a year - 18 months old.

my opel manta was built in 1986 so it would be a D reg in reality
but it was imported from northern ireland and the log book states it was declared manufactured 1986 it was not registered in this country til  1990 and sits on a G plate they stopped making mantas in 1988
i think( not 100%sure) this was stopped in the early 2000s as more and more imports were brought into the country

I though that all this registering cars over in the UK with later reg plates than the age would normally be had ended with when they brough Q plates in ... 1982? and it wasn't possible to have a car with a plate that suggested the car was newer than it was.  :-/

Cars registered/plated in the I.O.M only receive one (initial) I.O.M 'MOT'.....and non thereafter: my sister runs one here on the mainland (but registered to an I.O.M address) and seemingly, as long as it`s kept I.O.M registered it never requires a U.K 'MOT'.

...as you might imagine; it`s SERIOUSLY undermaintained!

Could also be from Northern Ireland or Eire. Value it as a 1998, that is its true age. First registered in 2002 refers to the first time a UK log book was issued for it. DVLA will always issue an age related plate so it can't pretend to be younger than it is.
