Got a new Meega, bring on the LPG conversion!!

Well, I went to look at an Omega in Bridgwater tonight, and fair play, I've not seen as straight an Omega for a long time. I drove it over about 10 miles, gave it a good test, and it does seem solid and mechanically great.

Here is the spec:

Omega 2.0 16v CD Automatic (unfortunately needs to be a 2.0 for the LPG kit)
ICE COLD air conditioning
Electric rear blind
Electric front windows
Sunroof
ABS,
All the usual toys
Brand new tyres within the last 1000 miles
FULL 12 months MOT

Everything I could think to test worked. Inside, looks like it's never been sat in. It has the original Omega mats which are as good as new. It seems a shame to take it all out and put the leather in!

Fired it up, it's been stood for a bit. About three seconds of tappet noise, and then it purred like a cat. No problem, due an oil and filter change.

It drove great. Gearchanges were smooth with no slipping that I could tell. I insisted on testing the sport mode, and driving it at 70 to make sure it stayed in top gear.

Also tested the ABS, which scared the guy!!!

Although no comparison to the V6, I wasn't upset with performance, it went along very swiftly and smoothly and I'm sure with a full service by moi it will go even better.

Jobs to do:

As soon as I get it home, the first job before going anywhere with it, is timing belt kit, aux belt and water pump change. I'm not being caught out by that again.

Full service, plugs, oil/filter, breather system and throttle body clean. etc etc..

Fit some toys from the CDX, such as rear electric windows, heated seat switches, hopefully MID if possible, cd changer and head unit... and so on.

Fit leather seats and doorcards.

Faults with the car?

Well, a £495 car wouldn't be without a couple! A thorough inspection has shown that the foglights are not Omega ones, hence they look terrible. So the V6 will donate some proper ones to go across.

On the two front doors, the trim is coming away from the front of the doors a little bit.

The steering wheel is not quite central when going straight, but I'm sure that can easily be sorted.

I heard a bit of a noise from the PAS pump, like a ticking. At first was worried about cam belt area, but it was clearly coming from the PAS pump. I think I confirmed this, because I shook the PAS pulley, and it has too much play when I pull it back and forth. No sweat, I'll just put the PAS pump off the lemon on there, when I do the aux belt/cam belt etc.

Otherwise, perfect. Can't fault it for the cash. I also opted for 6 months tax, so it's totally legal to drive home!

Walllet is £600 lighter, but never mind!

I really need to crack on as an urgency and get the LPG kit off the lemon, so we can put it on this nice 2.0.

When are you free Martin, and how shall we play it?  ;D
Guess we can PM the specifics if needsbe.

It would be great to keep as much info as possible about the conversion on the forum though, I think the guys will enjoy reading about it!

Here is my new baby for anyone that missed it.. I'm picking up tomorrow night :)

The LPG your fitting don't Omega's have any problems.... As I was toying when we had our first Range Rover to get it fitted but was warned by several people on a Range Rover Forum and the Mot station that fitting LPG on an older engine has a tendency to blow the head gaskets....so didn't bother!
Wondered if it was just Rangey's or not....

Looks clean - I got £640 for mine with little tax little MOT but clean and 142 000 miles

It will have electric rear windows

They go fine, just not V6 standard.

So LPG kit

This will take a few hours to remove - I will look up some notes, but DO NOT LOSE ANYTHING!

Check all the pipe work make notes and photos as you go.

I think I will be needed when reinstallation comes.

I think we ought to have a special thread for this.

They seem to be fine

Mine is a similar setup to what James (with some help) will be doing, ie moving across a system except in my case it was in a cardboard box!

I think we will mount the filler like mine - on a tow bar. I will be chatting with a localish installer as well.

I agree about the special thread, maybe we could ask the admins if we could (even temporarily) have a sticky, and make sure it's kept 100% focused on the topic of this LPG conversion project!

Looks like he's made a tidy job...

Looking at his pics though, it seems my kit on the lemon is complete? What could we need, apart from silly bits and bobs like pipes and olives?

i think the 2.0's and 2.2's go just fine, not as good as the 6 pots... but still sit at 80 all day long. Just lack grunt.

They keep up with most, just won't beat anything.

Should be a good project James good luck  :y

I have at least one 6mm joiner - I could not manage the entire run in one bit.

6mm pipe plenty - at least 6m

8mm pipe 2m should do

Wire, 10 to 15 amp at least 4 different colours, enough to go full length of car in each colour the route will be engine compartment, pollen filter, passenger side inside cill, under rear seat pop out into boot for 3 one will continue to back as a spare.

If you want to do towbar filler you need a new filler. (Else drill the side panel) That said my location is great for Calor Worcester (short hose reverse in), and BP Okehampton doesn't matter which side which is handy with the van on!

Not sure if we need any helpers or not though.

I have an apprentice electrician mate who is great with wiring, I will bring him. he's mechanically very able to. 3 of us should manage?

How much will this extra filler cost, and where to get it? eBay?

Not so good at all day car repairs sessions these days - used to do silly hours playing with vehicles when nearer your age, now I do as necessary.

Three people should be able to do a lot in a short time.
