I remember J Clarkson doing a proper fuel consumption check on a V8 Range Rover (I think he used a later 4.2) After he'd brimmed the tank he did the school run and did a bit of general round town going nowhere in particular driving. He topped it back up at the end of the day and worked out the consumption using paper & pen - non of the electrickery fuel computers!  ;) It was in single figures!  ;) 9.7mpg rings a bell!!  :o  :o  :o  :o

It averages 15/16mpg on petrol combined driving, which drops to 12 when on LPG. So effectively on gas you get the equivilent to 25mpg.

I had as high as 18mpg on gas on a careful run, which equates to 36mpg on petrol. Not bad...

Not bad for a 4 litre V8...

Depends on whether ou're going to work in it every day & how far you're going! It p's me off putting £50 a week in my car, just to do 20 miles each way every day.

Very nice.... JC reckons it the ultimate car, and not just as an off-roader.. and I don't disagree.

Well... I initially sold the Rangie, but the new owners were not happy that it needed a tad of welding for it's next MOT, threatened to take me to court and all that rubbish for selling them a "lemon". But the reality is, they didn't have a clue about classic rangies.

So who was I to grumble - I just gave them their £1500 back and releved them of the Rangie!!  ;D

The engine is sound. Always was a tad lumpy for the first min or so, but it runs happily on all 8 cyls and will change over to LPG at any time. At very high revs, it's not great on LPG, but normal driving you wouldn't tell the difference.

I know cam lobes are a common problem, but nothing leads me to suspect these ones have had any damage!

No easy well to tell on these....the cams are normaly pretty goosed by 60K miles and it has more effect at higher rpm....they still seem to run fine (it has 8 cylidners so if its running on 7.5 how would you know!), the timing chains are always goosed (stretched) by this point to..

Often they have low compression on one or more pistons due to the poor head design (to many bolts pull the head over to one side) which result in a slight headgasket blow into the vallley.

If you ever get stuck with one, give me a shout, I know these units very well...(I still have a 3.5 to re-build with hurricane cam and stage 2 heads etc in the garage).

The 3.5 I got had received 5K oil changes all its life and by 100K miles at strip down it had worn cams, the beginnings of head gasket failure, slight pickup on the main bearings, shot rocker gear and one hell of a slack timing chain....
