Is it possible to fit wider tyres to my existing rims
at present i have 225/55/16 tyres on the car and wondered if those wheels could take a wider tyre and if so how wide can i go?

it all depends on the j of the wheel

best thing to do is goto a tyre company and get there advice

but remember the wider the tyre the lower the profile to keep the rolling radius the same

unless you race, a wider tire will be useful for lightening your wallet..

although may stay nice on miggy , will consume more fuel and brake pads..and lessen the life of hydraulic steering pump..

You're right Nick. The 55 part is a percentage of the tyre width so a 225/55 is 225mm wide tread and the profile is 55% of that or 123.75mm

If you go up in width, the profile needs to go down!

OK  i will be a little more specific

I want to fit wider tyres to my rear wheels
i have the 16 inch elite wheels on the car
can i take it to 245/55/16  etc?
any btw i know it will cost more

it all depends on the j of the wheel
with out seeing the wheel to measure the j then i cant tell you if they wider tyres will fit or not
going by memory i dont think they will fit
best thing to do is get yourself to a tyre shop and get them to measure the j and they will tell you if a wider tyre can go on or not

you for sure shouldn't put 245/55/16. These ones have similar radious: 225/55R16 - 235/50R16 - 245/45R16.
