Car Tax- Spanish style.
« on: 17 May 2009, 10:29:51 »

My car tax is due. I know 'cos I can see everyone elses delivered to our local bar/post box. called in to the town hall and asked for mine. The guy prints it off in less than two minutes. "Why haven't I received one through the post?" "Too difficult an address for the postman."

Same happened last year. Anyway it has gone up slightly to 179 euros (about £160) so still OK for a gas guzzler! More efficient cars are cheaper and all the money goes to the local council. They set the tax not central government. I dare say in Marbella it would be twice as much!

You only pay once a year (whoever owns the vehicle in the Spring). No refunds allowed, got to be paid by 1st June or you get surcharged and you don't display a sticker but you must carry proof of payment(bank chitty) otherwise you get fined when stopped by a policeman.

WOW thats expensive Br :D Varche,
over here its 79 euros a year for a gas guzzler(3 litre) and cheaper fora small un, (39)
but no matter when you buy the car and put it in your name there is only 3 periods a year when you can tax it!!! no sticker either just a reciept saying you paid it!!! which you are supposed to carry but no one ever does!!! ;D

p.s your not the only one that doesent get mail delivered, friends of ours had to drive 23kilometers to the post office to get thier renewal notice!!!

our mail the postie hates the english and refuses to deliver here so we have to go to the town hall to get it, and when everyone filled out their
voting forms he threw them away so the english votes couldnt count,
and still has his job even after they found out!!!! :-[

£1381 a YEAR? I would expect and probably receive a butler to drive the car for that. That is a Kings ransom.

As to the difference in tax here it is simples. The more corruption the more tax they need. If you live somewhere like Algarinejo where time has stood still since before even Franco then they pay beans. I saw a guys yearly council tax the other day 1 euro and 42 cents AND he was complaing cos it had gone up! Bless.

No you can pay it at any participating bank of which there are many. I went to the counter to pay but the bank manager saw me and came over and called me by name (Don Varche) and took me outside to the automated machine and took me through the simple process of selecting payments then "swiping" my bar code on my A4 piece of paper and it even printed out a receipt to carry in the car for Mr Guardia Civil Policia should they wish to see it!

Oh that it was that simple in the UK. Apparently you can also do it from home via Internet banking and print a receipt off.

Better than queuing at a Post office (if you can find one still open) methinks.
