Vectra 2.5 V6 CD
« on: 17 May 2009, 17:22:05 »

Not strictly Omega I know but my son's thinking about buying one.

Is it the same engine as the Omega and therefore does it suffer from the same problems re blocked breathers leading to cam cover gasket failure etc.?

Different camcovers with a 'beefier' cam cover gasket design so tend not to leak (but other seals will!).

Watch out for rear suspension bushes, no big deal but special tool required to fit them.

vectra has metal cam covers, cam cover gaskets not an issue, but must keep the breathers clean as it does not have gaskets to blow on the cam cover, the crank case oil seal goes

DONT BUY ONE! is my bestest advice i can give you having owned two!

They are quicker than an omega 2.5 they will muller an Auto MV6 Estate having raced my old one against an one

they have a few inherant problems the cam covers are metal and so dont leak like an omegas one does instead it blows the rear crank seal contaminating the clutch and killing it

they are nowhere near as reliable as the omega for some unkonown reason! they have inherent flatspots down to bad manifold design

imho theyre good for 100k before the crankseal goes the clutch isnt an easy job atall you need a ramp front subframe job

Many thanks to all who replied, he did go to look at one but the guy had only bought it himself in April, also he couldn't find the V5  although he had a dvla receipt where he'd requested a new one. His reason for selling was that it was to expensive to get his girlfriend insured - yeah right -  at least my son had the sense to say No.

I will warn him off looking at others so thanks again.

Cambelt is easy on a Vec V6!

They suffer breather issues just like any other....but as said, it blows the crank seal!

Clearly not an issue if well serviced and kept clean.

No worse than any other car of that era

yeah i raced a 3.0 auto explod and mullered it although my vectra wasnt the normal 2.5 ;) expolice model had G cams in it (fitted by the previous owner i bought it off vvoc)

i dont have a clue why but they are soo unreliable compared to the omega considering they both have the same engine sadly i killed my'n deliberatly as i hated it and the clutch had the slipping problem

Some people really don’t like Vectras. Well, it’s the same engine but you will never have any problem with leaking covers (aluminium ones). Cheap gaskets are ok for this one.  Breathers problem? Breathers in Vectra are not going through sh... plastic cover, so there’s nothing to get blocked. Yes, after some years, nozzles might get blocked but it takes 2 minutes to clean then (don’t have to undo throttle body).
It takes bit longer to do the cam belt but nothing serious, especially that there are no trumpets to be removed. I must say that for me it’s better to adjust the cam belt.
2.5 is bit too slow, just because the flywheel is too heavy – ca 15kg, but can be skimmed and it gives a better performance. I am quite sure that Omega manual uses the same flywheel. Omega has few HP more just because longer and bigger inlet and double exhaust. You can always swap 2.5 with 3.0 engine...
Front and back suspension might be a problem so avoid vectras with tilted back wheels (like that /- -\ ).
Clutch is a pain. Most garages advice to remove the whole subframe to do it, but many can do by only pulling the gearbox.
Petrol consumption: mine is doing 39 MPG on the run (real consumption is 37.5), and 28 urban (real is 25).
This car is not as comfortable as Omega, it does not turn like omega and does not run like one, but it’s still a good and reliable. Omega for me is like a wife – gives you 20% of passion and 80% of pain and all you know that there’s something wrong but you never know what the cause. The more you try to fix it, the worse it goes...There is no passion in Vectra but there’s also no disappointment. If it’s broken, you know what it is and you’ll fix it.
It’s just my private opinion after having 3 Omegas and 3 Vectras.
