Freelander HG
« on: 09 February 2007, 15:50:13 »

My m8s grandad is coming up today and leaving his car here while he goes abroad, we are just 5 mins from Heathrow and offer free parking as long as we can use the car!  ;D

Asked the folks next door if we could put it up the shared drive, they have a rover 400 up there and a Freelander. I knew the 400 was dead but wanted to ask if they could move the freelander so we can leave a car there for 2 weeks (don't want to block them in)

He said ahh don't worry mate the Freelander has a blown HG its not going anyware!

They literally only just bought it 2 months ago, with 60k miles!  :o

I might enquire if they plan to sell or fix, but a possible project for someone?

Its a Y Plate Freelander in very good conidtion inside and out.... how much would a HG be?

land rover freelander....

Read Rover  :(

Read Rover K series Engine (betting on a 1.8) Same set up as the rovers - same block.

Doesnt surprise me as i heard recently of a 40k range rover on 31000miles with the same!

Change out of £200 if diy'ing it !!

A couple of blokes at work had the MGF two seater which share the same 1.8 engine as the Freelander. One of the guys had his done under warranty cost about £1000, and the other did it himself about £350-400 i think he said. Apparently the dowels that line up the head gasket and head are made from plastic and melt or something so have to be changed to the metal ones...  Elite Pete did his daughters he would be a good one to ask.

when a rover HG goes, fix it and move on. It WILL happen again without fail.

MG harder and dearer due to engine position  :( Freelander as stated earlier easyish and not too dear :y

Rover HGs go for a passtime. I genuinely see them as a service item that should be changed at the same schedule as the timing belt kit!

Wifee has 1.8 freelander 100k on clock. Potted history, new HG and cylinder head at 30k, new engine at around 60k, new HG at 90k. Fingers crossed when driving at all times. Oh common other problems include boot cubby filling with water, sunroof jamming and leaking, rear window jamming and generally bits falling off in the interior. Otherwise we've been really happy with it. Suggest look at  http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f9/ before taking plunge.

Its the cylinder head and block that are the design fault on the K series....not the gasket or dowels....

Whilst I won't argue on the K series bit ;), the Freelander has low warranty claims...

After mine, I have investigated this, and its looks like it may be a combination of things, but ultimately caused by cooling capacity (and the smallest glitch with cooling affects it), made worse by the fact it is (like most modern engines now) an all alloy unit...
