Dog House training, anyone know anything?
« on: 11 February 2007, 08:36:50 »

Girlfriend has a 6 month old puppy, cross between a golden retriever and springer spaniel .

Beautiful dog, but we can not, for love nor money, get the animal to go in the garden to do it's business. She's let out there regularly, but keeps insisting on going in the house.

We have tried the usual, including crate training previously, but presumably it's cruel to keep a dog caged for a length of time.

At a loss :(

You have to make going outside 'normal' for the dog - who prefers the nice warm house!!!

So, last thing at night, put it on a lead and take it out into the garden and walk up and down until the dog does its business. Then tell her how good she is and make a BIG fuss!

First thing in the morning, start with the dog again. Make the going outside bit exciting and fun, stay out there with he no matter what the weather and again make a BIG fuss, followed by a little treat (doggie biscuit).

This psychologically starts to work on the dog and it becomes a routine.

Our little dog hears me coming down to the kitchen every morning and is jumping with excitement at the idea of this 'ritual'. Out he goes, on his own now, and when he comes back he is always told what a good boy he is - which is all he wanted in the first place.

Try it - it works. But give it some time for the odd 'mistake'

She is actually pretty good at night, the problem is moreso in the day. Although she's taken outside regularly through the day (someone always home) - and fussed when she does her business..

She still just randomly does her business all over the house  :'(

we have a springer spaniel, she is 3 now. I think we used the old news paper trick, she used to poo all over the place, we manged to teach her to go onto news paper, then moved that outside.

At 6 months she is getting old for doing it inside! Megan (the springer) stopped at around 2/3 months.

If she does a wee inside the house, one method to tell her off is to push the dogs nose into their own wee. Due to there very sensitive nose they take notice of that.

Create a place full of news paper in the house (near the back door is the best place) and try and make the dog go there... then move the paper outside.

Pretty much as Tunnie says, We've got a Springer that has just turned one, did the same with ours, gradually moved the paper outside, now she is Ok, taking her/him on the lead up and down the garden is also a good idea like Fin says. Hope you've got a secure garden, most of mine is hedges and she was always legging it. I had to put a 4 ft fence up to keep her in one area, which she watched me put up, turned round, laughed and jumped straight over it :o

I used to tell my lab off when she was a pup for going in the house.....but you have to catch them in the act or else they dont realise what they're being told off for. Then id pick her up and put her outside.

She soon twigged that going in the house was not a good idea.

Also used to do as Ron suggests, used to take her out just before i went to bed....and stayed out with her until she wee'd and gave her a biscuit for being good.

Now, first thing she has breakfast and then goes outside on her own.....in the evening i give her a biscuit and she knows it time to go out for a wee.

I also give her two walks a day...and i still tell her shes a good girl if she does her business whilst on a walk.

All the above are good well proven methods. They all have one important thing in common. Praise your dog when it pees/poos outside. I spent a lot of time in the garden when I first got Henry and when he did a pee i got really excited and said

"Good Boy you did a wee" and gave him a biscuit

Neighbours thought it was funny though

As Tunnie says the newspaper trick works a treat I've got a Weimeraner that I've had since since a pup housetrained him using papers, when it looked like he was going to do what comes naturally we led him to the papers and he soon caught on. After a while moved the papers outside "job done" forgive the pun. Now he can go all day indoors if needs be without having an accident.
