New Connection (ADSL)

In the process of moving home and just been re-connected.  Was connecting at 7.2 and lived quite near to an exchange.

Moved to a rural village and didnt expect to connect at anymore than 3 or 4 MB/s so am quite chuffed.  They reckon the line takes a while to settle down and will calibrate itself over the next week to 10 days.

Slight hiccup in the change over at thier end but all sorted now.  So a painless transefer.  :y :y

Why are you only getting .5 if you are that close?  I'm stuck on that, but that's because I'm 5.885Km from the exchange.  2.5miles is only just over 4Km, you should be fine in distance terms.

Once the bras profiles have stabilised, do a large download test from a geographically diverse site, such as download the network install of XP SP3 etc.  Far more accurate than those 'false' speedtesters.  Or try it against the BT speedtester using the special bt test account (continually doing that will bugger your bras profile).

That statement doesn't make sense? Surely if you have 512k, there is broadband at the exchange. Bet no other provider has put stuff in, so you're on a BT DSLAM, which means you have the option of 'up to 8Mb' like all IP Stream customers (ie, all BT Wholesale provided DSL).  So its not the exchange. If you look up the exchange on Sam Knows, that should show what it offers :)

Line quality must be the issue.


I am about 2km from the exchange, and I know my line length is 3.5km.  My MaxDSL line syncs at over 7Mb now.  Both my lines, before I had some work done of them ::) were 5.5km, and were unstable at 512k due to poor SNR

Getting a bit quicker.  Also found out I am on a 20 to contention ratio rather than all the other being on 50-1.



Cheers for the advice Jamie.  Will try that later when I get time, this is only my 2nd time on the net as I am still moving.

TB helped me to establish that the line was capable of handling up to 3mb, still a bit behind Skruntie, but a lot better than I thought. :y :y

im still trying to get my old man to switch over to any one but "Worst Internet Service Provider for 2008" Orange (formaly Wanadoo and Freeserve)... the Livebox router is a pain as well.... as for download speeds... i would be lucky to get over 80kb/s no mater the location
