I dont want to be sarcastic here,  but remembering the shuttle accidents they are far from building a very far base thinking that thay cant just build a rather rubber nail to keep rockets together  :(

Good to see you're improving your English Cem. ;D ;D ;D

I hear what you are saying Cem, but in fairness you have to say that NASA have made significant steps to improve the performance of the shuttle fleet, with modifications to advance them still going on:

http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/main/index.html

Obviously these machines are becoming life expired, and of course any re-newed lunar mission programme would include a new launch system and vessels. ;) ;)

Lizzie , sometimes I like provoking you ;D :y  as you do also ;D :y

but this time I cant ;D

Seriously the plastic thingy was not a nail.. was a gasket which has to be double checked during tests of the producer firm and by NASA..

And to our surprise although one engineer stated the fact and warned the firm , in the proceeding events NASA dont accept to delay the launch  >:(

why because their budget was limited and a delay means more $$$  >:(

As for the shuttle, do you mean with the Challenger disaster of 1986?

If so here it is yet again, and I will never forget the bewildering feeling that set in as I watched Challenger explode, then that terrible feeling that all had been lost :'( :'( :'(

....it may not be a human based programme in the interim Ms Zoom, so any development of a new carrier system might well be more financially achievable:-/ :-/

Indeed Zulu, as I stated earlier in this thread, it will be of a type that will suit the military needs of the USA, with  nuclear payload a big consideration along with the requirement to carry technologically advanced hardware into space. ;) ;)

Perverse isn't it how the great strides made in the field of technology that benefits humankind on a day to day basis are generally borne on the back of research done for military purposes. :y

Yes Zulu, all so often.  The two world wars alone advanced technology by a tremendous degree in many fields, but especially in avaition, nuclear development, ship building, electronics, including radar along with computer technology,  communications generally, and of course rocket development linked to space research.

Sorry Lizzie it is wind up time, you missed the biggest development of the wars, the one thing we are still using to this day, medical developments. I will say no more  :'(

Crickey !, Seam to have started quite a bit of a thread here !!.

Actually Lizzie you're too late with your script for a film based on the moon being broken up and it causing untold disaster on Earth..... They've already beaten you / gone down that road with the film screen remake of the Time Machine !.  Probably why they haven't sent your cheque through !!.  Yes I can hear you now  >:( !!.

A lot of the comments I laughed at, like the one about it being done on a full moon as it'll be a bigger target !.

Seriously though.  NASA's track record isn't that good. Okay so they've landed man on the moon a few times, but there were a few they don't like to talk about that they lost trying in the process, as well as the Shuttle disaster.

We had both Voyager missions (no no no Trekies, I'm on about the probes sent into space, not the TV series ! - Focus people  ::) ). Aparently these were successful upto a point I belive, then there was the fact that the little six (or eight, or however many) wheeled rover that was sent to Mars, and they lost it. (though some say it was the first every Alien car jacking !).
Now we can say that they have been successful in one way, but the other way to think about it is, well its been an expensive loss with regard to machinary, but I have to be honest. If we're going to be sending humans up into space I think we need to start with the basic's of getting a craft that is safer (and cheaper to run !), before we even think about venturing out again.

I do agree with others though, all the money could be spent wisely on this planet to get it sorted first, then maybe we can learn lessons for the next planet we go to. But somehow, I think we've got a long way to go before we can even think about our journey outwards !.  We're still like babies learning to walk in comparison to the likes of Aliens and Sci-Fi (different topic thread altogether ?).

And to end, what if our space explorers did meet an Alien, do you think the imortal words will be spoken "we come in peace".......

And their reply "Yeah, untill your military find out were here, then what ?".

or

"Go back home to your planet imigrants, we're full !".  ::)
