Just saw this on BMW owners due to someone speeding he said:

Just seen this post..... an interesting point to note was that I had a family member who was pulled over, and the copper showed him the laser gun. But then this guys asked the copper to prove that laser reading was for his car, and not the car in front, behind, or indeed any other car......the copper said "you done this before?"....to which he replied..."lets just say i know my rights." That was the end of it.

Also, i heard that the copper cant just sit there with the laser out, waiting to catch someone. The law states they have to suspect you are speeding, and then use the laser to prove/check your speed. Also - there should be line of sight between you and the laser, so bascially, they cant/shouldnt hide round a corner to catch people out.

Is the highlighted part true?

They have to form a prior opinion that you were speeding, before using any measurement device.

 Camera van staff are notorious for zapping anything that moves, as soon as they can see it.

 Traffic officers need line of sight to be able to "hit" your car, but can be sat where they please... regardless of if you can see them from a mile away, or a millimetre.
 Around these Northern parts, the trafpol tend to play very fair as it is, can't speak for their Southern counterparts.

 The question about whether the laser speed reading was definitely for your car could work in your favour... or it could talk you into a court summons to argue, rather than you getting a telling-off... and courts hold police officers in high regard.

laser is obviously true.  rest (but I guessing) is probably 'dangle berries'

way I see it  is we all know the rules of the game so if you get caught your caught and theres no point in trying to wriggle out of it

If you cant accept the punishment of being caught then dont break the rules.

But .........  Unless they can show evidence in court of the camera being calbrated at the start of the dhift then there is a chance you can get off with the ticket.

Plenty of info about regards calibration, especially about 1 model of gun, just cant remember the details.

Lasers are required to be calibrated once a year and a certificate issued. Furthermore they should be checked against against a police car with a certified calibrated speedometer before and after any tour of duty. If you get to court you can demand to see evidence that this had been complied with. Speeding is viewed as a summary offence (tried by a magistrate) and there is no automatic right to prior disclosure - although the police will often prove willing to release the calibration records (particularly if they are in order).

You could also request the training records of the officer concerned. The laser has a very high skill requirement. Furthermore lasers should never be operated through glass or in poor visibility as it can distort the reading, but they are usable at night.

Apparenty to calibrade the point the laser at a flat surface (The number plate )  this is more accurate on a tripod mount than a hand held.  I have seen vids on the hand held being calibrated but it looks like Youtube has had to pull them, they where shocking and totally inacurate.

But if you know you were well over the limit, dont be a pratt, just accept the punishment.

Yeah defiantley, the bloke in question said he was doing 96mph so he is in the wrong straight away and shouldn't of done it, he's hoping to find any little way out of it.

So...  Proof of calibration at the start and finish of the shift, is it?

Notebook entry to say its been done?  Would that suffive?  Most courts think so....

Takes the same length of time to do as it does to write.  Does that mean it was actually carried out?   :-X

Kit thats a laser range finder is, apparently, the LTI2020, I think.

Personally, if travelling at a few leptons faster than you should have been, and you know you were, why argue?
