Hate to say it, we havent learnt anything from history ,we tried in the 19th century to enforce our will and it cost thousands of soldiers lives .The russians lost countless troops trying and now we think we can do it again.RIP the brave soldiers who served with distinction and honour, which is more than can be said off the majority of our political masters.

Generally I am in agreement with the government of the day making sound decisions to send our lads (with proper equipment) to fight the good fight however....

I cannot help but wonder if we readily get involved in armed conflict at the drop of the hat in order to promote sales of our profitable arms businesses and the horrible losses of life are sadly just a callous reality of a marketing exercise.

I also wonder if anyone has actually got a set of objectives and an exit strategy for Afghanistan. Maybe the same fag packet used for Iraq.

Finally if it isn't all about making money from arms sales then i wish to god that Britain drew its horns in and agreed to send "our share only" to any agreed conflict. By share the same as any other country in NATO or EU or whatever. We could become a wealthy country again if we spent less on arms

........that would be well put to Dr Reid, varche - I don't think we would receive a convincing answer however.

Your points are well reasoned and for the most part I agree with you, but my view rests on the culpability of our dear departed Leader Blair, preening his vanity to seek a seat at the top table by unnecessarily associating this country with the rather dubious intentions of the then US administration.

History especially that of Afghanistan, seems to have been side-stepped and disregarded in the myopic desire to engage in hostilities.
