I am glad to see that most of the copyright breaching Maintenence Guides on the other site have been taken down - that was blatant plagurism.  There are enough stickies across our Maintenence Guides section, and enough details in our Forum Rules that clearly indicate will will take action against anyone effectively stealing our content pretending its their own.

The Admins, past and present, have spent a great deal of time and money researching various things that make this site what it is.  If we see it blatantly copied, we will take any necessary action against those people - sorry for the hard line on that, but we have spent 3 long years and bucketloads of cash to get to where we are.  For those who think getting it right is easy, I spend more time in the back of this forum monitoring server stats, traffic flows, and tracing abnormalities, than I spend looking at the site with a browser.

The site in question, even without the removed Maintenence Guides (thanks :y) is a blatant copy of OOF.  Again, we spent a lot of time researching and implementing this for OOF, we do not expect, or will tolerate, other people taking the easy path and stealing our work.

Worse still, many of the (now deceased) Guides were cut and pasted in such a way that the images were still being served from OUR images server - bandwidth costs a lot of money, money we pay so OOF members can utilise it - we do not want to pay for other sites to get free bandwidth.

Our forum rules say that you can (currently) link to our articles - linking to a www.omegaowners.com url isn't (currently) an issue.

The name of the other forum - Vauxhall Omega Owners Forum - is also clearly a play on our name, and again is something we find unacceptable.

Whether or not another Omega forum is a good or bad thing is another debate. Personally, I don't think it is, as it splits a community.  Obviously, something has happened that I don't know about that has caused this to happen.  I would say that the effort in creating a forum properly would be better spent in resolving whatever the original issue was.  I'm certainly all ears, and thought I always had been?

To the OP, I wish you well in your departure, and in your new venture, but please make your venture your own work, and not ours.

Didn't know there was another omega forum, but if that is the case, I can see no reason why people can't join it -- or be a member of both if they so wish. As long as we respect and ackowledge each others successes and failures there should be no problems.

After all many of us are members of other (non omega) forums and there's no conflict there.

At the end of the day there's too much strife in the world without us adding our own.

As Gaffers would put it:

I cant really see a problem if there is another forum .
There is no problem with other forums.

There is a big problem if its not their own work, but are stealing OOF's.  If you didn't see it, there site is named similarly to ours (Vauxhall Omega Owners Forum), is laid out with remarkably similar sections and naming of those sections, and about 75% of their guides were a cut and paste from here.  This, to me (and to the people I've spoken to), is clearly unacceptable.

So, correct, no problems with other forums, as long as its entirely their own work

Ask yourself :  " WHY do I believe in what I believe?"

Remember that my opinions expressed here are not representative of the opinions of other members on the OOF Forum.

I have just taken the trouble to join this other forum, and eventually be accepted as a member.

In short the site is nowhere near as good as this one, but has many similiar features to our site.  There are still four maintenence guides listed, and one (authored they state by Elite Force1) "Thermostat replacement on the V6" is a definate exact copy of the guide of that name, by VX1, on this site.

TB is right, that is totally unacceptable.  I am cancelling my membership of that site with immediate effect! ::) ::) ;) ;)

They are one and the same, hence as the author of that thread, don't have an issue with him putting that on other sites (despite we say on the sticky in Maint Guides that all copyright reverts to OOF)

I certainly don't give my personal details to something of which I know diddly squat.

(and if I was proud of something I'd want the rather world to know about it !)

I had been busy trying to delete my account with that other forum, but could only succeed in changing my name.

However I have just received an e-mail stating that my account has been deleted, and I cannot contact the admins to find out why! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

So much for democracy and the right to publish freely your feelings! ::) ::)  I obviously scared them, and 'them' obviously have somebody feeding back information from this site!  Amazing :o :o :o :o  These forums are only for fun, but looks like somebody has decided that certain people are foes! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Pathetic!
