I think the decision to bin the whole thread rather than trim out a few posts which descended to personal insults is very wrong. The thread contained 7 pages of interesting debate regarding immigration, some of which was heated and went to far,but to bin the whole thread has reduced OOF to the politically correct, nanny knows best level of mentality which most members despise. >:(
P.S.If the admin team feel that I am  a racist please let me know and I will leave immediately.

No-ones accusing anyone of being a racist, as regards binning the whole thread, I'm afraid I took the easy way out, too time consuming to study in detail, and decide which post deserves deleting, and which doesn't.

I'm all for debate, but sometimes debates get out of hand, which in places, that one did.

Just to justify my actions - this morning, when I logged on, I was flooded out with emails, regarding this thread, and other matters.

It took me half an hour to read them all.

I think the Admins do a good job on here, at the end of the day its their board and they can moderate how they see fit.

Having "off topic" forums is a minefield, ive been a visitor to several forums in the past where theres been little to no moderation and they turn into a nasty cess pit after a while, especially with the internets being pretty much anonymous.

I would imagine theres no reason another thread on the subject cant be started, as long as it follows the rules we all signed up to agree to.

I think the problem with the old thread was it was started up late at night when people may have had a few liquid refreshemnts  :P and tend to post things they might not do during the day

I missed the offending thread but think AA has made the right decision... The admin team give up their own time, UNPAID, and if removing the offending posts is too time consuming then the whole thread is the best option.

Thanks, once again, for all the hard work admins :y :y

remembering some old threads from past , I think also sending a complete thread for the bin is a better approach to stop further problems..

also if some selected posts would be deleted those members can take it personal..

as a far member ,  looking from outside and considering the image of OOF some threads really must never be existent..

so well done admins.. :y :y

i think AA did the right thing in binning both threads. deleting a few selected post can often make matters worse.

I have not seen the thread in question, but I fully support Auto_Addicts actions based purely on:

1) The fact my PM box has burst again with all the complaints about these 2 threads. Sorting out the acceptable posts from the crap takes too long.
2) Auto Addict is a long serving moderator here with similar viewpoints to the rest of the Admin team, and has EARNED our respect. I'm disappointed to hear he may not of earned yours - believe me, his actions were taken in doing what he thought was best for OOF,

Having not read the thread, I can't add much more other than say that from the complaints received, I would have done the same thing I suspect.

We welcome debate on OOF. BUT we will not tolerate any abusive/offensive posts (public or private) against any other member.  The recent, worrying poisonous undercurrents on this forum recent are detracting from what we are trying to achieve - being the best Omega site on the net.  As part of that goal, we aim to be friendly, welcoming, all emcompassing in order to achieve that.

We hoped to achieve those goals via very light moderation, relying on common decency of members to help us in our goal, not alienate new and existing members.  We really don't think heavy handed moderation is the way to go, but the current situation is intolerable  >:(  >:(  >:(

Over to OOF's membership....

I haven't seen this thread, so cannot comment on the content -- but I know, from experience, that these things can, and do, oft go too far and stray from what we might term "Common Decency".

At the end of the day we must also bear in mind that this is a public forum, open to all ages, races and creeds. All of whom are welcome.

The mods are there, amongst other things, to keep us on track. They do a great job and help keep this place the great place it is.  What they say goes.

If any admin sees fit to delete a whole thread, then so be it. As has been said before -- it is more expedient and fair to all thread contributors, rather than singling out the "worthy" from the "not so worthy".

Frankly I have seen threads that have made me want to spit out my dummy and up and leave ( and I think I am fairly thick skinned).

We are all fellow enthusiasts, a lot of us are friends too. There is enough strife elsewhere in the world without dragging it into our leisure lives.

In the words of Gaffers .......

I made a couple of comments on the thread in question and I am glad that it was dealt with in the way it was.
The person who started it appeared to be looking for a response and got it in various forms.
Luckily in the most it was felt to be unacceptable for the forum and I completely agree.
Good work by the admin again  :y
