PC Upgrade Time - Intel i7
« on: 30 July 2009, 16:12:57 »

Anyone got one, what do you reckon, or is it worth waiting a while longer.

Looked though a lot of the boards and if any I reckon I would go for a Gigabyte GA-EX58-Extreme Intel X58 (Socket 1366) with a 920 (retail) and 6gb of ram.

Would appreciate anyone's thought's.   :y

What are you running now? you gotta ask yourself, is it really necessary?

Is it for gaming?

Yes, mostly for gaming.

I have actually done quite well in using this machine I have at the moment for the last 3 years.  Ok, it's had 3 video card upgrades, numerous hard drive combinations, on arround its 4 th case, 2nd Monitor, tried different DVD inc Litescribe (Uggghhhhh)

So yes, i reckon it's time.

Are you maxed out with your graphics card right now ie, GTX295. I'm guessing you will have Socket 775?

I'm running a Q6600 with a 8800GTX and thats still holding its own, if I were to upgrade now i'd just put a 295 in.

When games a too advanced for the Q6600 and GTX295 then go for i7 imho  :y

I have both of those, but the board that has the Q6600 has packed up, and my current board wont run that CPU

I tried to get a Gigabyte GA-EP45-DQ6 Intel P45 but the supplier has it on the clearence rack, and  wont confirm the manufacrurers warranty on it, is advertised as clearance they then classed it as B grade when I challenged them.  Thier warranty is only 14 days and possibly only DOA.

I have considered an Asus striker Extreme to run the Q6600, but then for the same money I can have the i& Extreme board, so maybe you can see where I am heading.

I can see what you mean now, and if thats the case then why not. But I wouldn't of thought you'd get a decent i7 and Extreme board for the same price as just an Extreme for Socket 775 if that what you ment?

775 v 1366 = arround the same board cost.

i have all the other bits inc 4 x PC 8500 mem so the tri channel memory isnt a consideration at this point, so it's just the extra for the CPU.

Well then i'd say go for it. Then sell your Q6600 and old RAM etc. to help pay for the new bits.  :y

when the subject is about games..there's no limit in hardware..

however I doubt that new games use full features of i7 :-/

I think checking game sites with board compatibilites is a good idea.. :y
