The Sky bloke told me the USB, Lan and other connections are not enabled on the Sky HD boxes.

I want to start pulling odd clips off the hard drive to edit out the bits I dont want and then kee p them on my PC.

I cant be doing with copying to a video or DVD recorder to backup.

So my questions are.

Does the E-Sata connector work.

Can I get any sort of cable that goes from Scart to any sort of plug that I can tranfer sound/video/films over to the PC direct.

Not the easiest of tasks but if your HD box has component output connectors then this might help - means having to buy some more kit unfortunately.........

If they are a pay channel the recordings are encrypted.

FTA they are not, but DRM will make life difficult - I know you cannot copy off HD programmes off the HDR when in Freesat mode

As far as I know all video data recorded onto the sky box regardless of pay per view etc is encrypted a certain way in which a PC will not read as video, I don't know if there is a way round it but if there is it will be on the net somewhere.

I do wish sky would see what sky are missing out on and enable all the ports and use the box to its full potential.

As the Sky "Bloke" said.  They wont unless they have to, if virgin did something 1st then Sky will follow, untill then.  We have to go without. :-/

I think they need to act now to be honest, Virgin have many more features available to them that I'm sure Sky could do better if they tried, using the ethernet for a start to give services like streaming music and proper on demand video both of which Virgin do. Don't get me wrong I don't like virgin its too slow and clunky but Sky still needs to step up a gear for me.

I can't comment on your Sky issue because I don't pay for any viewing apart from the License fee so I don't have one.

As for DRM, it is on the increase at present simply because it is too easy to get pristine (i.e. saleable) copies of material that people have invested heavily in, and deprive them of their dues (pirating to you and me).

A LOT of effort goes into trying to devise means of protecting material and that includes persuading manufacturers and designers to build-in DRM recognition.

HDMI (the most convenient connector on the back of your tv) should only ever be fed with DRM-managed signals.  So if you send to to a display via HDMI you can view it if you have the correct authorisation (Conditional-Access Card etc.).  If implemented properly, the Sky box will record with the encryption still included and you will need authorisation again to view a replay even if you found a way to transfer it to your PC.  By the same logic, if you are viewing encrypted material, any non DRM-compliant interfaces (DVI, analogue etc.) should be muted by the box.  Only non-DRM material (i.e. media that the originator has decided not to protect) should come out of those sockets.

This is all getting far too complicated for me.

Simply then, if they didnt want it recording then they should have coded it accordingly.  I still have loads of Videos recorded over the years that I can go pick up and slot in a machine to watch when ever I choose.  I dont copy to sell or give away, all recordings are there just purely for the mood I am in and whatI choose to watch at the time.

I cant understand why I pay £12+ a month for a "Licence" to watch such things, then £21 per month to the likes of Sky.  They then give me the access and facilities to record it and view to suit myself, so as long as I dont brak copyright or recording rules then surely why should there be a problem how/where I back it up till I get round to watching it.

Still confused and now have headache. :-/

Well it happened.

havent been able to record anything from TV for ages, lack of setup, disks, PVR etc.

Finaaly get Sky HD in, recording 2 channels at the moment, Highlander got mentioned on ITV4, so I thought, nip on to the +1 channels . . . . . . good theory, cant watch it or record.      Ah well, might see it complete from start to finnnish one day.

As said, headaches come with the territory.

I guess that if you did copy the programme onto your pc you would have to copy it back to an authorised de-cryption device (like your Sky box) to view it "when you get round to watching it".

What you MIGHT be able to do is swap the HDD in the Sky box for a bigger one so that you don't need to swap the programmes off.  You can do this on some PVRs but I think Sky are a law unto themselves.
