PC Help - Phone Related
« on: 08 August 2009, 15:58:13 »

Just had a chat with a very scared and concerned neighber.

She has the BT vison package, plus internet and mobile phone.  It seems both hers and her sons computers have been taken over and there is a suspician that her email account is being used to forward emails.

A friend of hers formated both machines and put some some software to try and track these events but she cant remember the name or details of this software.  She is on a secured wireless modem/ro--------------*******uter or was on th the last conversation, she has since sone on to a wired one but the problems continue.

She was even geared up to print things that appeared on her screen, but her printer keeps getting disabled.  Some how activety is being linked from her computer as when the log appears and dispears with out trace there is occasionally activity on her mobile phone which lights up does something and shuts down, plus all logs are getting wiped, even her own.

BT dont seem interested to help, and what ever she seems to do to stop or counteract it seems to get changed.

I am not wanting to get involved as I feel totally out of my depth.  When I moved here we found out there were2 BT and 1 non BT wireless service locally with one of the BT services being wide open.

Now annother interesting thing is that I had a brand new line/install on the 4th of june (with a lot of hassle involved) her problems all started on the 5th june, not saying they are related, but there is a tiny bit of line noise and I still get the odd echo on mine (link below is about my phone)

Anyone got any thoughts,.

Also, if I set up an old computer, could I plug a wireless modem/router to it and would it work with out being connected to to the BT socket.  Or would i have to install a wireless card.  I am intrigued if it is some one local then would they have a go at my machine and could I monitor it to find out whats happening, and if so, how or what would I need to do.

TIA.  :y

does her computer have bluetooth and is the phones bluetooth/wireless switched on?

it could be that the router has had its firmware hacked reset button may solve it but if the firmware has been flashed nothing but a new router would resolve it.

As regards the email. changing the address through BT (as well as the password) should stop that from happening :y

Bluetooth has been mentioned as isturned off in all cases.

Email has been checked and changed.

She seems to have had a crash course in learning computer security and I think she has sone as far as even getting BT to give her a new IP addy.

What is concerning is that an engineer came out to check her line and when she told him that there was annother BT user locally the enginer took out some contraption and hacked into his account to check in front of her and at least told her the problem wasnt the other BT subscriber hacking her.   What a thing to do in front of a paranoid customer. :-/

The tech should have tools to test user accounts but it is monitored and shouldn't be used without reason.
(I used to have various tools that would allow me to see pretty much anything on a customers tv service when working for virgin)
although the IP has been changed if the firmware on the router was hacked/adjusted to be used as a bounce port then a reset should be done (normally a small hidden button on the base) :y

I would isolate the whole lot from the internet for a start. Disable all net interfaces, disconnect the router, check the PCs for nasties and don't connect anything back up until you're sure it's clean and protected.

I would bin BT's router and buy one I and only I am in control of too, personally.

Oh, and don't use the Comtrend powerline adaptors either. Horrible things. >:(

Totally flatened and reinstalled her computer, dumped the wireless kit, now on a wired modem router.  When disconected from the net her phone still has issues.

She only connexts to the net when needed.  There was some sort of issue with the veiwing box as well but I couldnt understand her point.

She needs to keep her mobile number but I wonder if changeing companoes would help.  In fact i wonder it all this is phone related via mobile, and all based on the fact all items are on some sort of BT account.  Just a thought.

I don't suppose the phone is one of these VOIP handsets that comes with a BT home hub? That might explain why it throws its' toys at the same time as everything else - it requires an internet connection.
