On the way home from work SWMBO called me to say she was at the side of the road with an 82 year old gentleman with a puncture. He'd managed to gash his hand open and she wanted to know if I was near enough to change the wheel.

Anyway... 5 minutes later and I was there to change the wheel. Another 5 minutes and all was done and ready for the road again! Glad I carry my 3' Breaker bar in the boot though... The nuts were a little on the tight side!

Bless him though, he tried to pay us £20

In the end we agreed to accept £10 from him to go to one of the charities we work with as he wouldn't accept no for an answer.

I'm interested in other peoples actions if faced with a similar situation? Personally I will stop for anyone elderly or female in trouble virtually every time but not always for younger gentlemen. Your thoughts please?

Yes, no doubt is this silly age of ours some people would say "you have to be careful helping others in case they sue you or hit you over the head!"

Rubbish!!  It will be a sad day when we cannot help others due to a fear of being hurt ourselves!!!

I also do that, stop for elderly, I would be very careful about females though, I only stop when the wife is there.

I've always got my personal business cards in the car and offer them a card and my phone first. I also normally call someone to let them know what's happening

I know it's a bit of a risk in this modern day but at the end of the day I'd like to think someone would stop for my wife/mother/grandparents etc so feel it's only right for me to do the same

I just can't drive past... Admittedly I don't do it on the motorway as it's just not normally possible but any other road I will. Never really worried about being hit on the head TBH as I used to do it for a living, coupled with the fact I'm not exactly a small person and always put on hi-viz and have a 3' breaker bar in the boot which I always use for wheel changing

Nice one LD.  Yes, I allways have time for the oldies, let's face it, that will be us one day.

I once helped an old couple coming out of morrisons, thier 3 wheeler had stalled, pushed it to safety and jump started it, but there was a serious smell of petrol.

I followed them to the next roundabout but it conked out again.  Was on the roundabout, there was CCTV, so rung and asked advice off the police about moving it, they even sent a panda car to help.

Took the couple home to find she had a full chicken roast in the oven that was overdue by 10 mins and the oven had no timer.


My reward adter refusing the £20 offered, was a lovely chicken dinner, thier company for an hour and a promice from them never to leave the oven unattended, plus my mobile number in case they ever got stuck again,

2 wonderfull people.  bless them.

Going back to about 1995 I changed a wheel on a BMW for a Lady who had a flat tyre as a good deed. I didn't want any payment but she insisted I have a drink and gave me £5. In those days I could prob have had about 3 pints for a fiver in my local!

I once stopped in my courier transit on a country lane and changed a wheel for a young girl who was in some distress as she did not have the tools to do the job.....Well once i had changed it she did not thank me or anything she just jumped in her car and sped off......so nice one LD for every idiot who does not say thanx there 10 more who are very grateful....

Can't remember the last time I came across someone needing roadside help other than one of my kit car mates. I do normally stop if they look like they're not progressing towards mobility.

I'm with you, and have stopped a few times over the years to help with spare wheels etc - it's surprising how people don't even know where their spare, jack & tools actually live in the car.  :-?
I'd be reluctant/apprehensive these days to stop for a lone female unless I was with my wife or daughter.

I will help if th situation allows, I stopped about 2 years back as an old guy had tried to cross a road and lost his balance and fell over leaving a large flap of skin hanging off the back of his hand and a bump to his head.
I always keep a first aid kit in the car being a responsible trained first aider helped him out and another lady called for an ambulance while I patched him up

When I had my spectacular puncture a while back, 3 cars stopped to offer their assistance. One chap came with his hands in the air and apologised if I thought he was being sexist by offering to help.
I tend to be very wary of strangers and will wait for help from someone I know.
A few years ago I was out with my boss in severe wet weather and flooding when a car over took us in a lane, aquaplaned, and flipped over. We both ran out to help, being first aid trained, and were told to 'break off' very rudely. To which my boss replied suit yourself I'm not the one bleeding, got back in the car and drove off. I suspect if I'd been driving I would have called for help and hung round till it arrived!

It's a sad state of affairs when we have to be so wary of both offering and accepting help!

a few weeks ago i was around the back of beverley east yorks and i hit something in the road that punctured the rear tyre..i pulled into a layby gets the jack out etc... jacks the car up gets the wheel off...goes to the boot to get the spare and because somebody placed the lpg tank rather close to the spare(and we all know who that was don't we juev6 ) and it was really tight like a big lummax i pulled the whole car off the jack....so i'm stuck my breakdown is covered through my car insurance company who i'd just changed and not put the number in the phone yet...nobody in house at home as wife and 2 kids with me other 2 kids out somewhere....suddenly a ford ka pulls in behind me two young lads about 20 and a girl get out...and before you know it they.ve got there jack out and we've swapped the wheel...
 i did give them £20 to get some beers...it turned out they were army and raf but were at the driving school which is around there......
  a complete credit to young people and to the armed forces
