By teatime someone with a bit of common sense at GMP had issued a statement saying the ticket had been quashed but it seems noone told the Daily Mail.
I was always told that in similar circumstances do the same and if prosecuted go to court and offer the fact you were trying to allow the passage of an emergency vehicle as mitigation. Surely no court would be stupid enough to convict in those circumstances.

In most circumstances the Daily mail would have contacted GMP press office asking them and also advising they were going to press with the story, if GMP did'nt respond the story goes

Trouble is, John, DVLA or the local council dont have to take you to court. It is a civil matter and if they want to stick three points on your license then they will.

I was told by a driving examiner, that in these circumstances, if you cannot get out of the way without crossing the white line, then they have to wait until the traffic light turns green or you are instructed by a police officer to cross the line.

...although the natural inclination is to make room in these circumstances I think those are very wise words TD - if the call is sufficiently urgent someone from the vehicle concerned (police) will dismount and direct the traffic accordingly.

As far as I remember crewmembers other vehicles being driven to urgent calls - ambulance, fire&rescue, bomb disposal etc - have no authority, in relation to traffic regulations, to direct traffic in these circumstances

Personally,I have always moved out of the way for emergency vehicles and I always will.If they want to prosecute me for it I will refuse to pay the fine etc,so they can take me to court where I will challenge them to lock me up.
We must presume they are in a hurry for a good reason and it could very well be a matter of life and death.
There are some occasions in life when we have to stand up and be counted and imo this would be one of them.

I recently had to speed up significantly to slow for a speed camera to then speed up again before it was safe to pull over, with a Fire Engine closing fast.
I checked with the council, they said that I would have been liable to prosecution had I been cought on the camera.  This despite that proof, as prsumable the Fire Engine would also have been caught to.  I guess traffic lights are a bit more risky if crossing the line :-/

I believe there is an A&E department ( might even be  in Swindon whhere the cameras are now kaput) where the main approach is monitored by a speed camera. The Ambulance Authority has a full time department just for dealing with the tickets they get issued --- even though they do get let off the fines it still costs the authority to deal with them!!!!

Not the first time someone has been penalised for making way for an emergency vehicle at red lights, and I doubt it will be the last.

One thing is for sure, you better hope it's not me at the front of the queue while you are on your way to major heart surgery - because if it is then you are proper f**ked because I'm not moving till I see the green if the lights have cameras on them.
