In todays Daily Mail (yes,I know) Max Hastings writes a very interesting article about the great man.I found it very informative and thought some of you might like to read it.

Yes that is a very good extract from a book that I will be acquiring!! 8-) 8-) 8-)

It is good how instead of Martin Gilbert's near monoply on Churchill's history we now have another senior historian, Max Hastings, giving a new, probably far more realistic, down to earth, account of the actions of the great man.

Flaws Churchill certainly had throughout his life, especially politically as many historians, including one who tutors me, Dr. Tom Hennessey, highlights continually.  However it can never be taken away from Churchill that his perseverance, utter dedication to the cause, and single mindedness stopped this country from appeasing Hitler and fighting to defend the freedoms and democracy we continue to enjoy today.

A great, great man who we owe so much to ;) ;)

We all have flaws. No human is without them , Lizzie. I read the article with interest and it confirms my opinion that today we are desperately in need of someone of Churchill's calibre who can bring the nation together and fight the drip-drip loss of sovereignty to the the EU and the UN. In WW2, the country fought for its freedom and many, many, died. For decades we have accepted that the loss of life was not in vain: for it saved us from fascism and tyranny. Now, however, we stand idly by as our freedoms are handed over. The irony is obvious to those who give it a moment of thought.  :(  :(

We need that person today – each remaining day we are stuck with the current bunch of incompetents, from across the political divide,  is one day closer to this once great nation being rendered inconsequential to everything but toadies, smartly dressed wide-boys and back-stabbing bastards who would sell their grannies for a seat at the top table.

Tell me about it!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;) ;)

It is just that with Churchill his flaws did cost a significant number of lives during his very long political career :'( :'( :'( :'(.

But, rightly, we judge him on his magnificent overall achievement of saving Europe in WW2.  We must also not forget his success in bringing to the attention of Parliament, along with the Liberal leader Lloyd George in 1908, the need to introduce social reform.  Not unusually he had the guts to cross the House and lobby with Lloyd George for a reduced Dreadnought building programme, from 6 to 4 for the year 1909, against the demands of his fellow Conservatives who were shouting "We can't wait, we want eight!"  The great man would do this, risk his political career for what he considered to be a just cause 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-).

THAT is what we lack now.  Politicians of great conviction and great schemes, even if it means them risking their career ::) ::) ::).

That was also said about Churchill and those around him during his political career! ;) ;)  It has also been said about many politicians and groups of politicians throughout the decades.   Some things never change! :D :D :D :D ;) ;)
