Privatised motorways?
« on: 31 August 2009, 12:12:48 »

NM Rothschild pitches motorway privatisation plan.

"A radical plan to raise £100 billion by privatising the motorway network has been presented to the three main political parties by NM Rothschild, the influential investment bank.

The Rothschild plan has already won the support of Vince Cable, the Liberal Democrats’ deputy leader and Treasury spokesman.

“This is an attractive, positive idea which could release considerable resources to the public finances and may have real environmental merits,” Cable said. “The scale of it is vast — it makes rail privatisation look like small beer.”

Hold on a second! Don't we already own the motorways anyway? This plan would mean that the government would sell the roads to companies who would then charge us to use them. And don't we already pay for road upkeep though the VED?

Wouldn't be the first or last time the family silver has been disposed of.

Wouldn't it be great if the "Motorways " ended up being owned by Johnny Foreigner who could then charge what he liked! (Bit like your energy companies)

Our local bank branch closed suddenly a few weeks ago without warning. On Friday we received a letter saying it was going to be closed and giving details of our nearest branch. Those details were just blank. Wait till these banks are running British Banks like Abbey and A and L!!!

The privatisation of motorways could be smoothed through by giving every motorist a few shares. The dividends could give "free motorway miles". That would overcome objections from Sid.

Well I think the EU might have a thing or two to say about it .The german goverment tried to do the same thing 10 or so years ago and were told it wasnt possible to do as all the autobahns had been paid for buy the taxpayer . so how they got round it was by bringing in a daily roadtax to cover germany ,denmark and the benelux countrys ,but this is only for trucks after 5 years the germans opted out of it and now run a system called "Maut" and you pay by the kilometre and it is very expensive ,last time i used it ,it cost about £80 to go from Aachen to Munich.
sorry its a long one

What we need is a bit of good old British civil disobediance. :) Maggie got the message over the poll tax.
Admittedly, they wiil eventually sneak it through somehow, but we should voice our concerns forcefully before that happens. ;D

.........being fruit of the 'Mans' loins I wouldn't be inclined to agree with civil disobedience as it can run wildly out of control and be hijacked by others who have a much more sinister agenda.

However, I do agree that the present administration should not be permitted to have a free run on this issue, so we should ensure that those who seek our vote in the next general election have some form of coherent policy regarding transport especially where the roads network is concerned.

You pay per trip to use the railway.  For the most part, you don't pay per trip to use the motorways.

Roads are paid for out of general taxation (don't try and kid me that the Road Tax is ring fenced and used exclusively for the benefit of road users).  So if we switch to privatised motorways, we should all get a hefty tax rebate.  Shouldn't we? :-? :-? :-?
