Power station mass invasion
« on: 31 August 2009, 12:04:36 »

"ENVIRONMENTAL activists are planning a "mass invasion" of a power station following a vote by thousands of people attending the climate camp, it was announced today.

The decision to name E.ON's Ratcliffe-on-Soar plant in Nottinghamshire for the protest in October follows a debate at the camp to determine which site should be targeted next for direct action.

Groups are now planning to descend on the power station on 17 and 18 October by land, water and air, and say they will shut it down

This week's climate camp has seen hundreds of people who've never taken direct action undergoing training and committing to the October invasion."

I find myself in agreement with "Mad Jock"'s comment on the article. Surely this is conspiracy? Were they to succeed in their mad plans, who many lives would be put in danger by the associated power cuts?

...to what end I wonder and have they offered a viable alternative?

I think these individuals are blissfully unaware that they're being manipulated to raise awareness in a debate many of them don't fully understand or don't wish to.

I have no doubt that sinister elements are shaping events here and in that, lies conspiracy.

I would agree Zulu, they should have the facts about babies in incubators etc explained to them, and then see if they still want to shut it down.I can remember this happening at Ballylumford Power station in the early 70,s.The grand old Duke of Ballymena marched his men to the top of that proverbial hill, but when he was told about the reality of what would happen,he marched them back down again. ::)

Have I missed something here?  Surely even a NHS hospital has diesel generators on hot standby for power cuts?

Or is there more to this?

But I do do tend to agree that any minuscule minority group of activists who take it into their heads to invade a power station are perpetrating some form of civil disorder and should be severely dealt with. 8-)

They are entitled to protest all they want, it is (after all) supposed to be a free country.

However, the minute they trespass (and/or endanger others), then forget all the PC 'dangle berries'.....just kick the f**king s**t out of them and send them back home to mummy!

We had the same problem down here not so long ago down Kent with the "swampys" tried to invade Kingsnorth Power Stn ,It cost over 1 mil to police it and when the police got heavy handed the swampys started bleating about thier "Umen Rights" Personally i'd through the book at them if they try to get over or into the complex, about 20 years hard labour would be about right for the low lifes

Er no. They have sump heaters to keep the oil warm but they don't always start first time. The expectation is that power will be available for essential purposes within 40 seconds.

Critical care, operating theatres & special care baby units should have UPS (battery) supplies to keep things running for 20 minutes or until the generators kick in.

Standing orders should be that no operations are started while relying on the generators because there is then no safety back up.
