on the scrap heap at 50
« on: 05 August 2009, 20:19:19 »

Hi everyone , just a word to let you know what happens when you work from 16 to 50 and have paid your national insurance for your full working life.
7 months ago i had an accident at work ,and ruptured the ligaments in my shoulder, i have been for a MRI scan and the specialist said the damage will have to be operated on and will fit me in for the operation asap.I have no problems with that but as i am a concreater ,i can't lift the shovel with one arm ,and so i have been on the sick .I have received the date of my operation [19/08/09]. this has been a long wait ,but it is not my fault that i have had to wait this long. Then the bombshell has been dropped.I have now had my sick pay stopped, as i have been on the sick for 7 months , even though i have my opp in 14 days time, i now have nothing to live on for myself ,zero,HOW CAN THIS BE,I HAVE PAID TAX ALL MY LIFE AND NATIONAL INSURANCE, i thought this is the reason you paid it ,for such unplanned emergencies .I can't claim any other benefits as i am still employed, when i contacted the job centre plus, they said that as i have worked all my life, and had no drug or alcohol problems ,i can't claim anything, but must look for a job for the 14 days that are leading up to my opp, even though i am still employed, so who wants to hire a 50 year old man with one good arm for two weeks, i have shown ghost driver the letter that i received and he could not believe it either, sorry to bitch on a bit but it is quite upsetting, and as far as i can see well wrong, i have appealed but it is not looking good to be honest, >:( >:( >:(---JK

So are they saying if you has a drink or drug problem they would pay you?

I thought honestly pays, so they tell me.  it stinks matey.

Hope the operation goes well and you are fit soon.  my brother has had the same problem in both shoulders and had ops on each, and he is self employed.  Wasnt too long before he was back at work.

Tell me about it. I was self employed until late last year, same as you I have worked since I was 16 and payed my National Insurance. I went to sign on in Feb and was told because my wife earns over a certain amount I am entitled to nothing and she will have to keep me >:(

Good luck with the Op :y

rather outrageous mate, the welfare state was set up for people just like you.A safety net for honest hard working people who need a bit of help.It seems to me that they are about the only group of people who cant get any help. >:( >:( >:(
I had similar just over a year ago, also working with concrete, health issues used as an excuse to sack me and then replace me with someone else  :-X :-X
I had similar problems from the welfare state, never needed it before but when I did they were a waste of time,it was so frustrating and soul destroying I gave up in the end.Luckily found another job otherwise I think we would have starved. >:( >:(

Yes that is what they are saying, if i was an alcoholic then i could claim for alcohol, and if i was a druggy they could provide me with a drug substitute to try and ween me off them , but as i have worked all my life and have no problems with either i can claim nothing, what type of country is England turning into  >:( >:(

What gets my back up is, my wife deals with benefits for the local council, the other day she had a foreign family in who had just arrived in this country from Europe. The council had to hire a translator at £400 to tell them that the council would pay their rent and benefits because the parents didn't have work. If they didn't have any jobs to go to why did they come over here >:(

And not being allowed to talk about it is probably why we have to pay £400.00 for a translator---JK

I thought the rules had changed and prople had to at least be able to speak basic english.

Also to add.  A mate of a mate who is a CAB boss was saying in thier area that foreign families were given priorty housing, extra transport exspences and a food aloowance over basic benifitsm and not only that the local supermarket put a special isle into serve them  and took on a translater/operative to speak thier lingo so the the DSS would pay out the extra food exspences as a voucher payable to thier store.

Dude, if it was an accident at work you should be getting your arse kissed by your company!  They are liable and should be giving you compensation.  Call one of those accident lawyers and they will sort you out.  It wont help in the short term but could be looking at a nice sum coming your way!

If there was anyway to help you out in the next few weeks I would  :-[

(I can't wait to leave to country I loved  :'( :'( :'( :'()
