Hi everyone , just a word to let you know what happens when you work from 16 to 50 and have paid your national insurance for your full working life.
7 months ago i had an accident at work ,and ruptured the ligaments in my shoulder, i have been for a MRI scan and the specialist said the damage will have to be operated on and will fit me in for the operation asap.I have no problems with that but as i am a concreater ,i can't lift the shovel with one arm ,and so i have been on the sick .I have received the date of my operation [19/08/09]. this has been a long wait ,but it is not my fault that i have had to wait this long. Then the bombshell has been dropped.I have now had my sick pay stopped, as i have been on the sick for 7 months , even though i have my opp in 14 days time, i now have nothing to live on for myself ,zero,HOW CAN THIS BE,I HAVE PAID TAX ALL MY LIFE AND NATIONAL INSURANCE, i thought this is the reason you paid it ,for such unplanned emergencies .I can't claim any other benefits as i am still employed, when i contacted the job centre plus, they said that as i have worked all my life, and had no drug or alcohol problems ,i can't claim anything, but must look for a job for the 14 days that are leading up to my opp, even though i am still employed, so who wants to hire a 50 year old man with one good arm for two weeks, i have shown ghost driver the letter that i received and he could not believe it either, sorry to bitch on a bit but it is quite upsetting, and as far as i can see well wrong, i have appealed but it is not looking good to be honest, >:( >:( >:(---JK

Sorry to hear of your plight.  However, assuming that it is your work sick pay that has stopped, you should have a letter from them saying this and armed with your sick note from your doctor you should be able to get 'incapacity benefit'  it has a new name now :-/
You should get this even if you have a Job to return to.  I have been in this situation myself in the last few years a couple of times.  Go to the Job Centre, they can't expect you to live on nothing.  Also try CAB and or local Council 'welfare rights'  good luck.. :y

There was an interesting letter in the paper today regarding English citizenship and how easy it is to obtain nowadays, and a suggestion that good behaviour and hard work be rewarded with extra votes... if such a system were to be put in place  ::) ::) you can bet people like yourself in the position that you are now in would be treated a bit differently!

Fair play....   ;)

To the original poster, apologies for the partial thread highjack.

Also been in the same position as yourself at a similar age quite recently, (including the hoop jumping, note taking, prove you have been looking for work thing that the DSS requires) for the simple continuation of your Nat Ins contributions - even although they will not pay out a brass razoo to yourself in cash....   :-X

Chin up.  Perseverence won out for me and got something workwise without any assistance from 'The State'.   :y
