V8 Omega??
« on: 26 March 2007, 17:37:33 »

Just wondered if anyone knows if a V8 has been put into an omega??

I heard that Opel made a prototype omega, but it never went to production.

I assume the omega shares a similar platform to the holden commodore, so it should fit.

If anyone has anymore info on this, or knows of one in existance, that would be quite helpfull.

Many thanks

I read somewhere it was to do with the engine breaking up at full rev's over extended periods - but you're right, it should be doable in theory - sure someone on here more knowledgable will comment :)

well I've heard two rumours:

1) it never made it into production due to cooling issues, probably as ClarCE suggested
2) it did, but only in LHD ... but this seems unlikely ... I think the Holden cars use a different engine?

There are references to the V8 omega in TIS and EPC though, including an aluminium bonnet ...  ::)

The Omega V8 never made it into production, just a 'one off' concept car, GM couldnt be bothered to spend the money getting it to work properly is basically the reason, and to be honest i dont think in 2000 they would have sold that many.

The V8 works in the Commodore because they take the standard Omega floor pan and make it wider and longer.

To try and dump a V8 in a standard Omega would cost 'possibly' more than buying a '99 VT HSV GTS

Cheaper and more obvious exhange is the Lotus twin turbo engine, and as has been done before, leave the 'steelies' on and its a proper street sleeper  :)

I heard that the German regulations require a production car to pass a test whereby it is run flat out for extended periods on an autobahn (in a similar fashion to the taxi driver who last picked me up from Munich airport - in fog!).

Apparently the Chevy V8 died due to problems with coolant flow which were down to the block casting and they decided it was not worth resolving.

Can't remember where I read the story now. Autobahnstormers maybe?

Rover managed it on the 75, but it was a tall order for GM  :(

Thats possibly because Rover had some bloody good engineers.  Crap management though (esp in BMW era), hence their demise...

The V8 would have been great, I believe it was going to be offered with a 6-speed box too. Even the manual 3.0 always feels like it wants a little more power, and the extra ratio would be very useful too.

I'm surprised no one has done this in the USA other than the John Lingenfelter Catera-V. The junkyards are overflowing with recycled 5.7 liter V8s. Cadillac should have had a V8 option from the start like Lincoln did with the LS. Below are links to pictures of the Catera-V as well as Omegas and Commodores with V8s.
