Not coal but we do still burn logs on an open fire, 2-3 times a week during the winter. It is surprising how it keeps the gas bill down, and even the greens admit it is green friendly. especially as I collect old wood from work or anyone who has a fallen tree etc.
If burning wood like logs make sure it is at least 1 year old before burning. if offcuts from work etc make sure it is at least 2 years old before burning.
My favourite wood to burn is from an apple tree, really nice aroma.

And it really looks nice. And put's people in the mood if you no what I mean.  :D

You would have a never ending supply if you lived locally up here.  I know a tree surgeon that brings the days work home, chops it up and leavesit at the end of his drive free for collection.

He was even kind enought to cut a log into 6" thick disks for a poject I was trying many years ago and didnt charge me a penny.

I love domestic coal fires, but the best ones are in the firebox of a mainline steam locomotive, with 5 ton of the stuff behind you in a tender, on a very cold winters day :-* :-* :-* mmmmmmmmmmmmm :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* 8-) 8-)
