I did much worse things than James described when I was a teenager,I am not remotely proud of it,the exact opposite in fact.If I had been harshly punished at the time I would probably have felt hard done by but that isnt really the point.Looking back on it now I think if caught I should have been dealt with severely and would have deserved it if I had been.
So I dont think its a case of being hypocritical really, its more a case of having an adult perspective on it and realising that for the good of society these things need to be dealt with appropriately to try to stop another generation growing up more disrespectful and lawlesss than the previous one.
I think that a lot of these kids wil outgrow this type of behaviour if like me they eventually stop rebelling and start to remember the values they were taught at home,but its the ones who arent taught any values who we really have to worry about imo.

RESPECT is the problem or lack of it
when i was young If someone told my parents i had set fire to something i would have been rag dolled all over the house

when i was 7 i dialed 999 with a pal from a call box to see how long it took the fire brigade to get there stupid i know but as i said i was 7 at the time
 I think my mother removed all the skin from my backside that night  and taught me a valuable lesson.
Sadly fear and respect seems to be  something thats missing these days .

the enigma that is a teenager. We'll never understand. Never undertood when i was one. :-)

Seriously, think back,homework, exams, bulleys, revision, fights, motor bikes, push bikes, broken limbs (put those last 3 together for some reason.) spots, puberty, girls(dito) mates, fights, bunking off,in trouble at school, being lead astray by mates, fights, getting a job, not wanting a job, being threatened with the army,(....no? Just me then) interviews, wanting to leave home, leaving home, wanting to move back home,losing job, starving, another job, etc etc oh, and being a teenager. Divorced parents maybe, bell end for a step Dad. The list goes on.

Plus todays issues, druggs knifes, asbos, rrrespect whatever..... Wouldnt be that age again for love nor money.

Walked the dogs tonight at a local park.

Lots of Little teenage darlings, sat in the play area, drinking their lager - basically someone had been setting fire to everything  including wooden equipment. Personally not sure how they stood the smoke!

I called it in - needless to say, there were some blue lights pretty quick - unfortunately a bit too late though, the damage had already been done. 

Was it me that tuned up

God, Chris, I must have led a sheltered childhood ( along with my peers of the time). The worst we got up to was popping a banger (firework) into cow pats and watch the resulting mess fly !!!!

As Vamps says, if we got cheeky the local bobby would give us a cuff round the ear and our parents would give us more when we got home.

And, for me at least, the worst thing when I got into trouble (which I did, now and then --- but nothing criminal) wasn't the cuff or the belt -- it was knowing I had let my parents down that upset me and made me think twice afterward.

I think the key word here is respect, for others and for themselves. I am afraid this commodity is sadly lacking these days.

Your quite right. Lost respect for my parents when they split up, esp living with a schemeing bell end for a step father, both where teachers beleive it or not.

i have to laugh when people say the coppers should be able to give them a thick ear.  1, i would never consent to any one laying a finger on one of my children and 2 have you seen the size of some of theses kids lol i think the copper would come alot worse off

In this day and age you are probably correct -- times change -- and not always for the better !!!!  Not only were the kids different in my day, so were the coppers.

As I said before, there was more respect for each other in those days ( I am beginning to sound like my dad!!).

BTW -- no-one has suggested that coppers should be able to give them a thick ear. What thay have done is pointed out that a cuff (NOT thick ear) worked in days gone by -- you can laugh all you like -- you probably weren't there.

This PC, namby pamby, cover 'em in cotton wool crappity smack 'dangle berries' is what has got this country on the ever faster downward spin into the toilet. It has produced the goverment and business leaders we have today -- and unless pulled up will produce even worse in generations to come.

No you are correct i wasnt there as you put it im 23 years old with a son of eight months old and i work very hard to support my family so were not all bad. I think it is easy to judge the younger generation because you dont understand it. Things change and so do opinions it is just human nature.. I also think this is a good thing as children born out of wed lock in the good old days were seen a bastards theses day just a fact of life to name only one way times have changed. Everything that goes onto day went on all them years ago it just wasnt common knowledge as now we have a much better communication network so rather than just hearing what has happened in the local area you hear the news from all over the country on a minute by minute update. I totally agree that some of the behaviour going on is not exceptable and should be dealt with in a different way but i think you will find there are prison not just young offenders institues. And your generation has breed some nasty and none to savory people aswell but we all have one head two arms and two legs. We are not all that different so im sorry if i got your blood pressure going but at the end of the day im entitled to my opinion just as much as you are.

I agree it's not just the youngsters that are part of the problem (just look at those in power right now!), but all the government interference in how we live ( led by the PC brigade) -- they have killed human common sense !!!

As for my lack of understanding of the younger generation .... I remember I was young once ( albeit in different times --- and they were different). However, I kept reasonably well up to date with a daughter of 30, one of 24 and one of 18 as well as the two year old.

Yes, the same things go on today as did "all those years ago" .... and have done for centuries before that --- in fact pre 14th century it was a lot worse!  In my day we had mods and rockers causing mayhem. But, overall, looking through my rose tinted spectacles, I still feel that we had a better quality of life -- less pressured and more "time to smell the roses".

Finally ...... yes, you are entitled to your opinion -- and thank goodness we can still --- just --- voice our differing opinions -- until the PC lot stop that too. It's also refereshing to note, Rikki, that we can differ, yet not spit the dummies too far from the pram. I respect your right to have a different opinion and hope we all continue to enjoy the freedom to express it.

While I agree with everything you say, I joined the Navy at 15 years old, we must remember one thing.
The yoof of today, that we are complaining about are still the minority element, unfortunately we rarely hear positive stories about our young people, this is not newsworthy, negative tales just help to increase the poor image and raise suspicion of all youngsters among the population...
