What's all this about?
« on: 18 September 2009, 16:20:31 »

Today in the post I received a black plastic package containing my free Dutch-made ecologically friendly "Shower Smart", which I didn't ask for. It was sent by a company called "eaga" (apparently working with the government and energy suppliers). It is suitable for mixer tap showers only, not for electric showers or showers with multiple heads. It can work with power showers with mains-fed hot water (as I have), but I can alter the flow rate on that anyway.

Assuming it can be used, you are then instructed to run the shower for 5 seconds into the plastic bag (supplied). If the resultant water level is above the line, you would have an "inefficient shower" and would need to fix the Shower Smart. Conversely, if it's below the line, your existing shower is deemed "effiicient" and you would therefore not need the product. Basically, all the Shower Smart is is a threaded chrome flow restrictor, i.e metal mesh filter and a plastic plate with small holes.

Now, I don't want this thing and I don't think it's of any use to me. But who paid for it? The taxpayer? Oh, and let me remind you that it was made in the Netherlands – is there no company in the UK that could make it?

This is all very bizarre. Someone's making loads of money out of this green business.  >:( >:(

I should hope I've got an "inefficient shower" with the ruddy great pump I've got in the airing cupboard. ;D

So, having beaten the supermarkets into not giving away as many plastic bags what are they doing?  ;D
