Government & DVLA to get more money out of us !
« on: 19 September 2009, 20:58:35 »

Someone told me a story today that between the Government & DVLA, that their thinking of putting in plans that even if your vehicle is off the road, in storage or what ever, even if in piles of boxes, that you'll have to have vehicle insurance covering that car / bike / whatever ?.

So if it does come about:-

I'm thinking those out there who buy cheap cars to break for spares, will have to have insurance for it still.

If you've got one or two motorbikes in bits, or a project that you don't know when you going to get finished (we've all been there), then you'll have to get insurance anyhow !.

Anyone else heard about this coming in ?  >:(

I'm not so sure, look at how much money the government ploughed into the i.d. card scheme, and now they're thinking of scrapping that.  Thing is the car insurance idea is money coming into them, whereby the i.d. card didn't have anything in it for them ?.
And knowing of the governments track record these days, I wouldn't put it past them ?!.  :-/

Basically the same as the SORN system -- if the vehicle isn't removed from the database by destruction the last keeper will be hassled for details of its whereabouts, I am guessing.

Thing is -- I can understand carrying insurance on the road to protect other road users from damage you might inflict --- but what sort of carnage in a box of bits in a lock up somewhere going to inflict ???

Sounds to me like another stealth tax which ever way you look at it - Though wonder if it'll go through before the next election or after it, I'm betting on after..... wonder why ?

they could never inforce it, all you have to do is say i bought it today when you put it on the rd. people would not declare owning a car if they had to tax and insure something they will put on the rd

Is this the UK way of making more money, and an extension of the EU idea for "end of life" on vehicles and parts. This is much talked about in classic car and bike press and on some forum's.
It basically means the introduction of the 10 years old and it scrap idea. Now even the Germans are against it I believe, but the euro greenies want it so we don't pollute as much from our exhaust pipe, they have conveniently forgotten about theemissions from building the new car to replace the scrapped one of course.

The other idea muted by our government was continuos taxation of motor vehicles, i.e. the ending of the SORN scheme. So the average person will not be able to have a car in the garden for parts unless it has got MOT insurance and a tax disc. If you took the car off the road just after tax/mot/ins it you maty be able to keep it for 12 months but after that ypur stuffed.

I could go on and on and on, on this subject. Sorry

Unfortunatly they could, as is it is now up to the seller to post off the registration document with your name and address on it. Ok you say give them a false name and address, great until the time you want to put the car back on the road and you have no log book, if you say you have just bought it they could then demand to no who you bought it from. If you do not give a name address you are fined and have to pay all the back tax etc.

I don't like the idea, but I suspect they will diddle us at every chance they get.

Personally I think we start a revolution.  ::)

Have to agree, and I wonder if the rest of the world is well aware of the financial problems that are going to hit the UK PLC next year, the world did say the UK will be last out of the recession, is this because brown is spending now so it looks good to get re elected and then hit us with it when we cant do anything about him, or if the others get in there will still be an awful mess and brown can sit back and say well you elected the other lot.

Really apologise for waffling on tonight chaps.

You don't have to apologise for waffling on chap, that what this forum is all about - interesting to get other thoughts on what people think on subjects - and these days the government seems to be a hot topic, and not just on here either !!.

intresting notion to tax cars not being used.
they cant get all those using thier cars on the road to tax, mot and insure them.
however stationary ones may not be as difficult to spot.
i can however imagine nieghbours ringing the specialy set up phone line.
it apparently cost each of us that do insure our cars £30 a year to cover those who dont
