And she floats!
« on: 20 September 2009, 20:24:43 »

Well after a much overdue launching "Pen-gooin" has finally seen her first outing in the water.  I launched her today in the local canal under motor only.  Next weekend I test the rigging and how she goes under sail.

What it took:

Set of plans off www.boatplans.dk

5 sheets of marine plywood
20L Epoxy resin
60m fibreglass tape
20 of 30x10x2500 pinewood
1L Wood stain
2L Epoxy pigment
10L Marine varnish

Plus other various marine chandalry

a buttload of various tools

3 stitches in my right hand

200 pairs of latex gloves

4 bottles of vigegar (for epoxy removal from skin)

1 bottle of port for launching  :y

Here are the pics of one very happy muppet and a boat built in his garage:

If you've seen 'Surf's Up' you'll understand the name :y

One for the bow, one for the water....

... and one for me

Look at the speed - 5 knots I reckon

One happy muppet!

Nope just been scoffing some buritos, although the thought has crossed my mind  :y

Well I started about 2 years ago but work has been a major PITA so basically I cut the wood in tidworth, assembled the hull in Germany, and finished it off in Aldershot.  I went to Iraq halfway through and not to mention the work load getting in the way.

Number of hours actually working on the boat, I would guess about 50-60, because the epoxy takes time to cure, set, etc so you find yourself doing 30-40 mins work and then waiting 8 hours to do the next bit.  It p!sses off the wife when you get up at 1am to go and put another coat of epoxy on the hull  ::)

The hairdryer is a £150 electric boat motor.  I have modified the plans for it to have 2 watertight battery compartments which can hold 2 leisure batteries each giving me about 5-8 hours of continuous power.  So when under sail I can go a whole weekend without having to recharge.  It has a fishfinder, electric and manual bilge pumps and the all important compass.

Next weekend its the sail test  :y

Cheers Debs, your compliment is important to me due to your background.  I hope you can actually see it at some point to really see the work that went in.

I reckon about 4-5 knots but my gps will confirm it next week.  The motor was so big I had to cut the shaft down quite a bit.

It's the sail test I am really looking forward to, just finished making the sails yesterday  :y
