If they want to get jobs they should be given every assistance to do so.If they dont, starve them into work would be my answer. It may be a bit different at the moment, but in recent years there was no excuse for not working imo.

i'm sure theres no-one in the oof who hangs a machete at the front door, it's not a representation of Britain in my experience so don't let the Mail tell us how we all live - if you believed the Mail no-one would venture outdoors what with the marauding gangs of immigrants, drug dealers and rapists loose on the streets

Ah...............the balanced accurate reporting of the good old "Daily Mail"........the well known "hanging and flogging"paper. :D :(
A good newspaper (which this bog roll is not)......would report objectively......without the need for sensationalism. ;) :y

when i left school in 1977, everyone got jobs, nearly all the ones i know did apprenterships in engineering or similar. im now being turned down jobs in shopfitting for favour of cheaper labour from outside.

If you lived in certain parts of some of our major cities your experience might be different BJ. ;)

I have to agree with Albs on this one.

Angell Town Estate...Brixton....1985....weapons were common household items even back then.

i'm out in the sticks now, but most of my life i lived and worked in Glasgow, yes there's drug dealers with guns and machetes but it's not typical, it's not the typical British family is it? the Mail loves to show its largely middle-class, comfortable readership what "life" is like on the "streets" - i think they've been watching too many episodes of The Wire  ;D

The word "typical" covers quite a wide range in this type of scenario.

You are correct when you say it is not typical of the average British family, if that typical family you refer to happen to live in a nice middle class area.

However if that typical family live in a 10th floor flat on a shithole estate that even the old bill have classed as "no-go" at some point (eg, Angell Town Est, Stockwell Park Est, North Peckham Est, etc), then you'll find it's quite commonplace to have something in the house.
