"Hi chunk
Best I can work out about the rivalry between Portsmouth and Southampton is all to do with football.
I was born in Southampton, but I loathe the place, and moved out as soon as I could.
I have heard other rivalries exist because of the shipping/docks but don't no any details on that one.

I won't enter into the "my town's better than your town argument" as I believe it to childish. But many years ago the idea of Solent City was talked about and it would start just east of Portsmouth and end Just west of Southampton. Both areas would cease to be as is, and we would become one major city.

I think people from Southampton are called Sotonians. "

Could'nt agree more mate the rivalry is childish but I must say so far nothing malicious. I work just up the road from you at Prysmian. I think fairoak is a really nice place :)

It's a bit unclear but possibly to do with metal trading when the trade routes with turkey were still thriving, apparently after trading ceased turkish people stayed behind and so a fair few people locally were of turkish decent.

 ;D Also thought to share a sense of humour!! ;D ;D ;D

Another version is that a Turkish ship had many sick on board and had been refused entry at every other port. The ship was allowed to dock at Llanelli and the passengers received medical attention. This also ties in with Ljay's post as many stayed on here as there was work in the steel and tin works.
As Ljay says, it's unclear but most versions tie in with the steel industry.

Best I can work out about the rivalry between Portsmouth and Southampton is all to do with football.
Nothing to do with the footie.
The "rivalry" started after Southampton dockers secretly went back to work after agreeing with Pompey dockers to remain on strike.
This action resulted in the Southampton dockers being known as "scum" from that point on. Since then the name has evolved to "Scummer", and (as far as Pompey are concerned) now applies to anybody from Southampton.

Thanks for the information KW, I had heard there was a docks connection, but did not no what it was. Do you have any idea when this took place (roughly what year),, I ask as I have always found Southampton docks to be a no go area for normal people, I mean you can only get a job there if you are a relative of someone allready working there.

Oh yes, should add it sounds like you are reasonably local to me.  :)
