I can name quite a few state capitals and have a working knowledge of the US government and financial figures (that's people, not numbers).

The average American, as far as I can tell, has no idea about the geography of European countries. I once heard one asking if Scotland was in Ireland.

I wonder if this is because they are stupid, or because their education system teaches them that they are the centre of the universe and the rest of the world is basically unimportant.

Quite a few Americans are completely unaware of the existence of Wales as well. I mean, we're completely different to the English ffs.

Polite replies only please

40% of Americans deny that humans evolved from other animals and believe the Earth and everything on it was created by an invisible "super-being" 10,000 years ago!!! ;D ;D ;D

40%...not 4 or 14 but 40...Four-oh, 2 out of every 5 people in an affluent, educated,modern, western country genuinely believe the Earth is 10,000 years old  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

so they believe dinosaurs roamed the earth at the same time as man!!! (that would explain the dodgy Rachel Welch movie)

aren't religious nuts hilarious? - and the US is by no means the worst offender - i'll bet in Iran it's even higher :o :o :o

Devils advocate time again ::)
If we were slinging all these insults about lets say Africans or Asians for example the thread would have been pulled by now as being too racist and rightly so.
I dont believe the statistic about how many believe in creationism.
I dont know all the countries in Africa so perhaps we are being a little self important in expecting Americans to know the geo/political make up of the UK(I know many British people who dont even know what the UK is,or what countries it consists off) they have a state (texas) which is twice the size of France.
The notion that a nation that big and diverse actually consists of nothing but tens of millions of rednecks is ludicrous.Go spend a week in NYC for example,in many respects it makes London seem like a little backwater town I find it an incredibly diverse, interesting country, and like it or not if it wasnt for them we could easily have been over run by the soviets and various other potential enemies in the last 50 years.
There are American members on the forum, reading stuf like this will dismay them I,m sure.
My 78 year old Dad believes that the world is approx. 6000 years old, because he is a staunch old fashioned Christian,it was still the accepted wisdom in many quarters as recently as 40 years ago. ;)

i love the US - i'm just gobsmacked by the huge proportion who believe, or say they believe, in these fairytales  :o
it's a fact from a national census, the figure was 40% dont believe we were descended from animals and 20% were unsure
it's not racist - America is one of, if not thee, most racially diverse nation on Earth - i'm not attacking race - i'm attacking the bizarre beliefs of a worryingly large section of the general population.
by the way, the same question in the UK 16% didn't believe we were descended from animals - i worked with one of these bozos, he found it hilarious that i believed in evolution, like it was a debate in the 1800's or something  :-?

I'm not so intolerant of religious views as Bannjaax. Specifically, in the case of the US, if people choose to both believe in Christianity and to abide by its teachings (notably the Ten Commandments) I, for one, would not call them "bozos".

Guess I'm just old-fashioned.  :-[

i'm very intolerant of idiotic fairytales being portrayed as some sort of "truth" and i'm not going to defend my position on that.

lets say theres a little green man who floats around the universe. this little green man created everything, and controls everything in the universe, except he's invisible but you must believe he exists because if you don't, terrible things will happen

i've just created a faith

now, prove to me this invisible, little green man doesnt exist and then we'll talk about religion  ::)
