G4 led lamps
« on: 03 October 2009, 23:02:42 »

I was looking at replacing some/all of the spot light lamps in my caravan  ::)  for the led type, partly cos they'll last longer than the halogen and also for the reuced current draw. I notice that some are ordinary led's and others are surface mounted ......

Is there a prefered type to buy?

One thing I have noticed with LED lighting is they are great for being seen, as in push bike lights etc, but there is a distinct lack in the depth of vision when used as a torch etc. I find they also give a different kind of light.
Have you seen them in use in the application you require ?

I think I know what you mean, it is a very bright light but very 'straight' and intense, even more that a real mag lite.....  :) :)  No width / spread, a bit like a big 'laser pen'    My experience of them is in torches, so limited at the moment... ::) ::)

Have a look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light-emitting_diode#White_light

Fluorescent lights might be a better solution for reasonable quality white light without too much power consumption, but not a direct replacement, of course.

No I haven't yet. I do know what you mean about the light output, as daft as it may sound, led's seem to work best in total darkness, whereas a normal tungsten lamp will help out in a place that is less dark  :-? .... I know what I mean  ;D  ;D

ths is the 1st time I've been able to get here to look at any replies!  ;)

Surely you mean, pikey wagon?  :P ::)

On a more serious note, you could use the leds, but they need some kind of multi directional refleactor (bit of the headlights type) to have some decent lighting i believe

LED's in hier current form wont repalce incandescent as they only emit (in white format), 3 narrow ranges of colour e.g. Red, greena dnBlus (a white LD is actually 3 LEDS close together.

The result is a light that is white to look at but, does not support detail well as when light reflected from such a light source is observed, a lot of detail is lost (you need a wide bandwidth light source).

Hence why flourescent lighst work better as they are a wide bandwidth light source.

As for normal v surface mount....there is nothing in it as the light emmitting 'chips'will be the same, its just a different package type!
