We have had slop buckets in our area for a couple of years the council empty them once a week. You can imagine what the contents are like after a few days when the weather is warm I'm all for recycling but I draw the line at a bucket full of rotton food waste

The answer might be for every family to keep a pig or two then the slops and billions of £worth of food thrown away in Britain each year just cos it is out of date would be put to good use.

surrey county council already do this, they will not accept slops in the main black bin, has to go in a special slops bin

This is great! that'll be another huge truck with a noisy, polluting diseasel engine winding its' way around housing estates doing fractional miles per gallon, causing an environmental impact that's been conveniently forgotten, in order to collect something worthless. 

Another few jobs for the bin men and a few dozen for the box-tickers who decide what they do and monitor whether they've done it, and no doubt sift through our slops to see if we've been eating anything we shouldn't. A few more gold-plated pension schemes for us to provide out of our council tax.

Mind you, wasting money on the public sector is going to solve the nation's economic problems. Gordon and Alistair said so.

My bin is emptied once every six weeks on average (that's only because my neighbours put there rubbish in too). I have a dog & she eats any thing that i don't want, but that's usually not alot as i don't buy too much & so nothing gets wasted.
They want us to recycle more, but when you buy a product that comes in a plastic package that isn't recycled (margerine for instance) how can they expect US to be more green. Tosser's

We have the green and black wheelie bins, plus a blue container for glass and metal (I think)

Just down the road my mate has 4 wheelie bins. not even sure what they are for.

Biggest problem for me seems to be plastic.  Bottles, bags, freezer wrappings, take away tubs, but yet if anything I thought they would have wanted that seperating.

Then we would have.

Black = Non Recycle
Green = Garden cuttings and card board
Blue = Glass and Metal.
?? = For plastic

Plus we have a blue canvass bag for newspapers (sorry I had forgotton this one)

Maybe there is a sensible midpoint for those that don't want or are able to keep a pig.

They could try reducing the amount of "slops" rubbish. This could be done on a voluntary basis after all people have (presumably) worked hard to earn enough to buy the foodstuffs only to then throw them away. However if that doesn't work  then maybe punitive income taxes would help reduce waste (Clearly if British  8-)people can afford to buy and then throw away £BILLIONS worth of food each year) they could afford more tax.

Another suggestion might be to adopt European schemes without door step refuse collections but instead have street corner bins clearly marked for the various types of rubbish. People would then think twice about how much rubbish they threw away if they had to actually carry it. Councils could save money too as the rounds would be quicker and could reduce council tax. Oh and the old people could have theirs carried by a community minded neighbour (rememeber those?).

Personally I think it is more than a little sad that the people with are worried about recycling. The many people in the world without no doubt would love to be in that position.

I have my own food business and produce quite a lot of food scraps and have often thought about getting a pig and fattening it up for Cristmas. The only problem is that I wouldn't have the heart to have it slaughtered cos I think pigs are cute.
Back to re cycling our local council do not have the facilitys to recycle the most problamatic waste their is namely plastic. :-?

If you do decide to keep a pig, buy an old Baby-Burco & boil up all of the scrap food before feeding it to the pig as swill (let it cool of course)

Stop recycling paper or cardboard. Every time you recycle these materials, you prevent a new tree from being planted on a tree farm, in place of the one that was cut down.

We have just had this bought in,

Now baring in mind I live in a flat with NO outdoor space whatsoever, so all these are on the pavement which is only just over 2ft wide!

Black Wheely bin - Landfill waste
Blue Box - Glass
Clear bin bags - Plastics, paper, card etc
Green Wheely Bin - Garden waste and FOOD SLOPS!!!

 

And then I got a letter off the managing agents for the flats saying the council had complained about the bins being on the pavment! 

My reply was "where do they want me to keep them, up my ar*e!"

The council withdrew the complaint!
