Job situation: Some News & an opinion
« on: 25 October 2009, 19:23:29 »

Dear all,

Some of you may know that I've been unemployed since the end of June. Buying an Omega and fixing it up/tinkering with it has been great therapy - especially with the support of OOF. :y

The news is that I'm very pleased to be able say that I've got a new job and will be starting sometime next week.

The opinion I have on that matter is that the majority of the alleged help from the Jobcentre/Agencies etc is pretty poor. I've also been really cheesed off that with all the scores of applications that have been sent off, I only had one courtesy letter and one one phone call back to say no. Thats a terrible state of affairs really.

The way I got my new job was via my own personal "network", people I know, chasing up leads via ex-colleagues, friends of friends etc - going back 30+ years in some cases. This won't work for everyone, but use LinkedIn and get recommendations it really helps.

So, thats my news, am really looking forward to starting and getting stuck in.

TTFN ......... Rob

Excellent news, i am on LinkedIn myself, getting jobs is always much easier when you have the right contacts.

No replies is nothing new, when i sourced my uni placement (4 years ago now), i applied to 150+ jobs all over London. Had less than 10 replies!

Congratz matey. Hope it goes well for ya!

Similar situation for me - been doing little month long contracts on trains all over the uK since February, and only got a proper job that started last Monday - at a place I'd worked at (as a cantractor) before.
Nice to be asked back! :)

Both the new company & I are both taking a bit of a risk with each other TBH. We sort of know each other from a year or so back, but its certainly new ground for me - so time for the old dog to learn a few new tricks.

My new boss is young enough to be my Daughter, so new experiences all round. Its also a very small family owned firm - again all new for me. But they have a great new product that's really exciting & I'm really looking forward to getting in at the start of something new and making a contribution.

Fingers crossed .......

Well done matey -- keep us posted on your progress  :y

Since leaving full time education back in the 70's I have never been in need of a Jobcentre, thankfully. Whenever I have changed jobs I have done the legwork myself, or been headhunted ---- haven't always been 100% happy with the results, but, hey, only myself to blame.

Hope it all goes well  :y

When my last place was taken over by Americans it was last in first out! They got rid of all senior people on the higher pay bracket. Brought in a load of junior developers which knew squat about mobile.  :(

They seem to have no understanding of people or Europe. They sacked 50% of our tech team. The NEXT day the CEO of the US sent a company wide e-mail asking us to congratulate a US director on their promotion  >:(

I was in a conf call with them once, our heads where in arms when they said.... 'Oh the Germans have a different word for ringtone?'
