What are the rules on driving an un-taxed car? Got the Saab today with no tax (had it bought back on a low loader of course and never drove it around to see what it was like at all ) Anyway it's in the garage now so no-one can pick it up but what are the rules on un-taxed cars, had a look on the DVLA website and it said it still has tax so was thinking it's probably been sent off so they get the money back. Obviously going to get it taxed but what would happen if I were to drive it around wth no tax, it's got MOT til june next year and swapped insurance over today so thats all in order.

Driving with no tax is a civil offence, so the worst the old bill can do is to tell you they will report you to the council who's road you get stopped on.

However, if you get caught in one of the gestapo's DVLA's organised tax stings, they can snatch the car unless you fork out (there & then) for the on the spot fine and a tax disc.

What would the council do any ideas? I intend to try and avoid the local road checks they do one about quarter of a mile up the road so will keep an eye out up there.

I recently (June) bought an Omega from 100 miles away from home with no tax but some MOT, so before collecting the car called the DVLA to ask about the situation.

I pre-booked an MOT close to where I lived which meant that I could legally drive the car to the test as long as it was insured - which it was.

So, I simply drove it home and then rung up and cancelled the MOT as the car was then safely in my garage.

If you do this then check that you have a printout of the test booking is case you are stopped by the Police.

Utterly plain and simple - no tax disc displayed = offence (not sure if criminal or civil).

Additionally, that dates on the disc have to be valid (eg, you can get on starting 1st dec tomorrow, but its not valid until 1st dec).

Will get it but have to wait until the insurance paper work is through this car has to go within 6 months though tax is £222.75 for 6 months 

Additionally don't want to get caught and have it taken into a compund, so may just leave it tucked up where it is  :-/

Failure to display is civil, as is no VED itself.

VED is a tax/duty imposed by the local council upon users of motorised vehicles.
Failure to pay said tax/duty for use of roads is just the same as failing to pay a builder for working on your house.

Demand for back duty isn't automatic, in fact it is rarely enforced.
As to a new owner if the back duty card is played, simple really....prove the day you bought it and you pay from that day.

Thats what I wasn't sure of having only bought the car today, have recipt of sale and everything saying it was bought today but don't know how that would go down with the law  :-/

Not really but I can't wait to get it out properly but thats no excuse either really, lets hope the RM strike doesn't make my insurance docs take a long time 

I was reading you have 5 days if you order online but you have to show your old Tax disc which I obviously don't have

If caught today, you explain you just bought it and tax it from 1st of this month.

Only offence committed (in actual law) is "failure to display" (your car CANNOT be seized for that)...and even then you are only guilty of failure to display if you cannot show good cause.

Buying the car on 29th with intent to tax immediately is considered good cause, although you would need to prove by actually getting a tax disc that is backdated to the beginning of the month to cover the time you drove it on the road.

If you travel untaxed, no matter how carfull you are, if you get clocked bt ANPR equiped Plod then you are paying a fine and back duty, even if only to the 1st of Oct.
